[T]he teen was reportedly buried in sand with his friends while hanging out on Pompano Beach. A doctor allegedly told the family that the worms likely burrowed under his feet while he was buried, WMC reported.

...

Hookworms are known as soil-transmitted parasite worms, and typically live in the small intestine. The eggs are transmitted through feces of an infected person, and the larvae can mature into a form that can penetrate through the skin of humans.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), hookworm infection is mainly acquired by walking barefoot on contaminated soil. While most patients do not suffer any symptoms or side effects, some may experience gastrointestinal issues.

Dumas told Fox 13 Memphis that part of his treatment included an attempt to freeze the worms.

“While she was using the liquid nitrogen, he could actually feel the worms moving in his body,” Dumas said. She also claimed that Pompano Beach health officials told her that everyone knows to wear shoes because of the risk of parasites.

We had a neighbor order a fancy hunting dog from the South years ago and our dogs ended up with hookworms. The medicine from the vet made them high as a kite...had 3 dogs looking totally stoned for most of a day.

How strange that they can just burrow through the skin, and people don’t feel them go in?

Hookworm used to be extremely common in the south due to children playing in bare feet.

The larvae are about a millimeter in length. It might feel like itching or pinpricks.

45 years ago my wife and 2 yo daughter arrived from Vietnam.
A week after arriving, we noticed my daughter had roundworms; the doctor said she also had hookworms.
The gave her a single quarter size thin sugar cookie wafer with some medicine in it. Within 2 days all the round worms and hookworms were gone.
It seems like this should have been the treatment for the teen.

Thank you. It’s been a couple years and so far so good. But, treatment put a serious hurting on me. I’m no longer the same, but I’m grateful for what I have.
