Tour de France halted after riders sprayed with tear gas
The Sun ^ | 24 July 2018 | Alex Terrell

The farmers were dispersed after dumping bales of hay on the road, causing scenes of anger and confusion.

The protest outside Fanjeaux — just 18 miles after stage 16 had begun in Carcassonne — forced race officials to stop the cyclists and wait safely, rather than risk crashing with pepper spray in the riders' eyes.

Strange that the farmers would resort to this form of protest, bicyclists are such polite and reasonable people.

Bernard Hinault knew how to deal with strikers blocking the road.

Yes, I know the main point of the article was about the Tour de France, but you’d think serious “journalists” would at least give a minor mention of what the farmers protest was all about.

One article I read indicated the farmers
were protesting a cut in state aid.

Pfft, you really think today’s so called “journalists” are going to go beyond 2 steps and provide a clearly written article with all of the convening facts so as to paint you a full and broad picture of the situation? Pfft

Journalism seems to be a lost art

One need only be a HS dropout with a resume highlighting Left Wing activism these days.

“Protesters in France have long tried to hijack bike races, a visible means to raise the profile of their campaign. The clip above makes reference to others doing the same. These days the police and organisers are more alert and often a bargain is agreed to let the protesters threaten a blockage only for the race to pass by with the cameras dwelling on the banner-waving activists.”

It’s part of an ongoing problem in the EU governing subsidies to farmers.

This statement from the source sums it up:

“In a joint statement, two unions accused the government of “laughing at farmers” because of plans to reduce the number of “less favoured agricultural areas”, which are entitled to EU subsidies.”

Blocking the TdF was just opportunistic and the Gendarme’s demonstrated a lack of training making for hilarious news but biased reporting reflected in the headlines.
