For Poles going to the UK, it's not only the young. Many middle-aged folks (the stereotypical Polish plumber) moved as well.

yes we have a shortage of workers for some physical work. And our unemployment has dropped from 15% in 2010 to abotu 6% now. But most of the jobs are in the high-tech industries or in construction. We importa a lot of Ukrainians for construction work and as nannies, dog-sitters, cleaners etc. These people can be highly educated but do this work as it gives them more money than they would get in the Ukraine

Many of the Poles in my part of the UK seem to be putting down permanent roots and appear content to do so. I think that they have definitely affected the employment prospects of some nationals here in the UK, but overall they make a positive contribution - in stark contrast to some other arrivals. I worry that it is those with most “get-up-and-go” who venture abroad, which must be deprive their homeland? Perhaps I worry unnecessarily?
