Leo Varadkar was branded an airhead today as Downing Street dismissed his extraordinary threat to ban British aircraft from Irish airspace in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
The Irish PM was slapped down by Theresa Mays spokeswoman over the saber-rattling which is being seen as tit-for-tat for the UK reclaiming control over its territorial waters.
As the row raged, Mrs. May urged the EU to take a more practical approach to the negotiations insisting her Chequers plan offered a comprehensive solution to the need to avoid a hard Irish border.
And No. 10 gave short shrift to the threat from Mr. Varadkar, making clear he had misunderstood the legal position. [ ]
Brexiteers were even blunter, accusing Mr. Varadkar of being an airhead and making himself look ridiculous.
If British planes were banned from Irish airspace, it could block the UKs main route to the US. Critics have also pointed out the vast majority of planes leaving Ireland fly over the UK leaving limited options from Dublin if the two countries blocked each others airspace.

The other epithet that the pro-Brexit people in the UK hit Varadkar with was “EU toady”. Which is 100% accurate.
Varadkar was a big driving force behind that homosexual “marriage” referendum back in 2015. At one time he was actually Ireland’s defense minister, if one can comprehend such a thing.
Varadkat, now surely that’s a fine Irish name.
And voting for an openly proud militant homosexual Taoiseach.
Right. Treaties between sovereign states. And each sovereign state can choose whether to enter into or leave a treaty. Or to suspend it. And it can be heavily regulated with permissions granted and denied. Do we remember all the issues with opening up flights over the Soviet Union? (It is true that closing its airspace to the UK would be a bizarre and self-defeating move for an Irish government and would in fact never happen.) (And it is also true that the Irish leader is anti-Catholic twerp.)
Exact what air defense assets does the Republic of Ireland have?
Could they even enforce such a ban?
Russian planes routinely over fly the U.S. and vice versa. For instance, a polar route from New York to Singapore pretty much has to overfly Russia.

Varadkar is an “EU toady” as the British pro-Brexit politicians pointed out. This is another call by him to accelerate development of that EU military that he basically forced Ireland to via the “permanent structured cooperation” (PESCO) agreement.
