Angry American Airlines Non-Rev Passenger Goes on a Facebook Rant
The Points Guy ^ | 07/20/18 | Caroline Schagrin

American Airlines and its dress code requirements for non-revenue passengers have caused a lot of controversy in past years. Remember last year’s #LeggingsGate when United created a stir on social media after denying boarding two “non-rev” female passengers from boarding because they were wearing leggings?

Non-revenue passengers fly on stand-by because a friend or family member works for a particular airline company, but American had a strict dress code policy used to prevent these passengers from boarding their planes if a passenger is not properly clothed. Last year, the airline decided to relax its dress code policy and allows passengers to wear whatever they want — as long as the clothing is “neat and clean” and does not “offend or distract.”

So when a non-rev passenger tried boarding an American flight from Miami to New York in tattered, ripped denim shorts, the airline told her her outfit was inappropriate. The passenger, Nardia Bennet, followed up by posting a 28-minute live stream berating American and its employees.

The video features Nardia swearing at employees demanding that the airline treat her and her daughter with more respect, but the airline is saying the way Nardia handled the situation and yelled at employees also prevented her from boarding the flight. Nardia continued on Facebook on Thursday that she plans on suing American because of the way they treated her. The video showed no signs of mistreatment, but it’s up to American to decide whether a passenger’s outfit meets their standards, even with its more relaxed policy.

Should be further consequences for the actual employee contact that got Nardia this privilege.

I got a new joke: Hey, what do you call a retarded Nadia?

There are some people who can complain so much that finally they get a free airline ticket.

This gal was going for a free lifetime ticket

I think the ripped jeans look I ridiculous and tacky. But, it’s a free country; if people want to dress like bums, they can. But if a company has rules prohibiting certain clothing be worn on their property, and those rules are published so they can’t be missed, they should have that right, too. I’m sure lawyers are lined up, though, to get a piece of American Airlines. I wish there were standards for practicing attorneys...

I remember my first airline flight. It was an American Airlines Boeing 707. My brothers and I all wore our suits with neckties. If you wear your good clothes on the airplane you don’t have to stuff them into your suitcase. The short pants tee shirts and swimming suits go into the suitcase.

If you want to be treated with respect, act respectable.

To act like white trailer trash, a majority of blacks would have to raise their standards.

Today I hate to fly anywhere, the anything goes dress code and the non-civil people you have to deal with destroy the experience.

Why should people wear a coat and tie to fly on an airplane? You should dress comfortably in clothing that allows for the safest egress. For crying out loud, it's a bus with wings. It's not an experience that is destroyed by a relaxed dress code.

Now the non-civil people, I'll agree with you on.

I dunno. I just don't expect much out of flying. I guess I've done it too many times.

“Buddy Pass” or standby/non-rev... they make the rules. I’ve flown in suit and tie back when THAT was the way. They make the rule, I enjoy a benefit. I also knew the rule ahead of time. If they didn’t, then they can blame themselves.

I remember in the 80’s, a neighbor was appalled that some parents let their kid wear jeans to church. I have mixed feelings; on the one hand, I mourn the loss of decorum, but on the other hand, as long as your clothing is modest, what difference does it make what you wear to church? The important thing is that you went. When my husband was growing up, in a poor area, the boys all wore their best jeans and a white button down shirt, to church. Most of them didn’t even own any dress pants. My mother-in-law dressed like June Cleaver, every day, even while she did her housework. She probably got some of her clothes from the Goodwill, but thanks to the wealthy people who donated them, she was very stylish, and looked like a million bucks, no matter where she went. I had a neighbor, who is now in her 90’s, who never owned a pair of slacks, and wore expensive clothing any time she left the house. Inside the house, she wore a housedress, but the stockings and garter belt were always on, underneath, as long as she was awake.

Heck, nowadays, people don’t dress up like church, to go to church.

Amen. My former pastor told me that he would often do a double-take when looking out at the pews because based on the dress of a lot of the women he thought he was at a burlesque show.

Went to a baptism last week. Had to change because Mrs. Buckeye did not think I was dressed up enough for the occasion. When we got there the guy in the pew in front of me was wearing ripped, distressed denim shorts, sandals, a Hawaiian shirt and a three-inch cross earring on one ear that looked like it was about to tear his earlobe off.

Good on AA for not Boarding these two!

I grew up flying Non-Rev as Dad worked for AA for 42+ years. I had to wear a Suit,Tie and Dress Shoes every time we travelled. We were the last to Board the plane every time we flew. I remember one occasion that Mom and I got on last and while taxiing to wait in the takeoff que the plane returned to the gate and we had to get off to let 2 paying Customers on.

The instructions from Dad were non negotiable:
Do as asked or told by the Flight Crew.
Do not tell anybody that we were flying Non-Rev the exception being the Cabin Crew just incase they had missed that we were Non-Rev while boarding. Offer to move seats or assist the Cabin Crew in an emergency situation if needed.
When asked what meal choice always say “whatever you have the most of after serving the Paying Customers.” Even if we didn’t personally like what the food was Do Not Complain, deal with it or don’t eat. And there were more than a few times we got nothing because of a multitude of reasons.
Sit in an Emergency Exit row if possible to open the Exit if needed (plus that gave extra legroom due to it being an Emergency Exit) because then as now most people don’t listen and pay attention to the Emergency Briefing.
Stay seated until all other Passengers had deplaned no matter if we had a Connection to make or not.
There were a few times that we got seated in First Class because that’s where the seats were available. (Had to have Dress Clothes on just incase) Be prepared to move to Coach if asked or told to so Paying Customers could be upgraded during the flight if needed.
