If one local politician gets his way, Chicago could become the largest city in the U.S. to trial a universal basic income program.
Chicago lawmaker Ameya Pawar has thus far received support from 36 co-sponsors on a bill to introduce the pilot program. If the bill receives adequate support, it will be voted on by City Council. If the bill passes, it could then be enacted, so long as Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel doesnt veto the approval.
The proposal entails giving $500 a monthno strings attachedto 1,000 families in Chicago. The bill also calls for a change to the Earned Income Tax Credit program for these same families, to enable them to receive tax credits on a monthly, rather than annual, basis.
Pawar explained to The Intercept that automation has the potential to threaten millions of jobs, which in turn could serve to foment or perpetuate racial and social divisions. We have to start talking about race and class and geography, he explained, but also start talking about the future of work as it relates to automation. All of this stuff is intertwined.
We need to start having a conversation about automation and a regulatory framework, Pawar argued, because if jobs simply go away divisions are going to grow and, in many ways, were sitting on a powder keg.
He therefore hopes that padding families incomes, thereby offsetting some financial need, could help avoid resentment.
Nearly 70% of Americans dont have $1,000 in the bank for an emergency, Pawar said. Its time to start thinking about direct cash transfers to people so that they can start making plans about how theyre going to get by.

How can UBI be universal, even within the confines of Chicago? Is Chicago now going to print its own money? And if it did, how long would it be before $1Chicago would be worth less than $.01US ? I can
t imagine it ever getting past pilot program status and a pilot program is not sufficient to destroy Chicago while it raises the City high on the Faux Virtue scale.
Well it’s a declining cost in Chicago. If they offered free funerals for gunshot victims, they might be in trouble.
Bankruptcy impending......
I can tell you this, next month that won’t be near enough money... And you have the next mount, and the next....
None of it is their money they are using, you know that and so do they.
Or he will reluctantly pass it knowing its gonna fail, and have the fallout land on his political enemies who pushed for this. He uses it to let them take themselves out with a crap idea.
Well, at least, buying minority voters in Chicago will now have some transparency.
It’s now becoming just out and out robbery of the working class... Robbery, that’s exactly what it is.!!
Not sure how many votes this will buy. The 1,000 families getting the money would certainly vote Democrat but they would mostly Democrats anyway. The thousands of other families that were left out might get pissed off. I’m just sayin’
Once they eliminate anyone with a criminal record it should keep the coffers in decent shape.
Dems using Globull Warming math again:
1,000 = universal
Drug dealers! Gun dealers! Set up shop now while you still can get in!
Illinois will run out of cash soon—what difference does it make? ;-)
If I were them I would spend a few million in advance to hire the best lobbyist firm in DC to prepare their bailout brief and bribe Congressional committee chair-animals—while they still have the cash to pay the bills!
Great idea....great idea.....
Tiny Dancer Mayor must not have enough shootings.
Where are they going to get the revenue?
Property taxes are already high real high.

Shitcago’s extant stupidity is rivaled only by its endemic corruption.
As with Pennsylvania’s metastasizing Corner Cancers, Illinois’ Mogadishu on the Lake is the milliion pound boat anchor tied to the neck of an otherwise solidly conservative state.
(bonus points for deducing the common denominator)
I heard that the amount is $500. If true, that’s pointless. It’s either just enough to allow you to stay alive, but remain miserable, or allow you to buy more crack.
Giving money to someone who has not worked to earn it is not only pointless but worse. It damages them, mentally and in every other way.
Below is an article about Finland which is giving up its two year experiment with universal income. The interesting thing is, no reason is given as to why they are giving it up. In a different article somebody in the Finish government, who spoke anonymously, said that it had failed miserably on every metric they’d established. But, apparently, there was no official reason given. At least, not one I found.
Someone on TV this AM had a better idea. Give everyone a $500 tax cut. Oh noooo . governments would hate that!
