At least 1,000 people gathered at the grandiose tomb of the late Spanish dictator Francisco Franco on Sunday to protest against Madrid’s plans to move his body, an AFP photographer said.

Franco, who ruled Spain from 1939 to 1975 when he died, is buried in a valley just outside Madrid in an imposing basilica carved into a mountain face with a 150-meter (490-feet) cross towering over it. Known as the Valle de los Caidos (Valley of the Fallen), it is a deeply divisive symbol of a past that Spain still finds difficult to digest.

By late morning, a long line had built up of people waiting to attend a mass inside the vast structure after a far-right group called for a “national, patriotic and religious pilgrimage” to prevent “the plunder” of his grave by Spain’s new Socialist government. […]

Under Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who took office on June 2, the new Socialist government has quickly pushed forward plans to exhume his remains, saying Spain “can’t allow symbols that divide”. …

I think there may be a site rule that you have to include a picture of Chevy Chase with a post like this.

So typical of communists everywhere. Erase or rewrite history.

“Those who control the past, control the future.”

Ironically that’s from George Orwell who fought against Franco and with the communists before he saw the light.

#2. Well, Chevy is right in that Generalissimo Franco is still dead.

However, Franco has a nice monument. Chase might get a handprint on a sidewalk that dogs piss on.

Don’t like Franco but I like the Catholic monarchy. And had the Spanish commies had their way, Spain’s monarchy would have met the fate of the Romanovs whose deaths we mark the 100 year anniversary of this week...no less...

Spain “can’t allow symbols that divide”. …

If that's the case they will have to destroy the whole Valle de los Caidos (Fallen) monument. If you've ever seen it, it would not surprise you to see a recreation of the Nuremberg rally start up. It reeks of fascism.

Half the population doesn’t know who Franco was.

The fallen Catholics probably object to the giant cross.

Franco saved Spain. No wonder the Communists hate him.

Valle de los Caídos is actually a giant underground church and a Benedictine monastery. Franco did not ask or intend to be buried there, and this was a later decision by his family.

The place is meant as a huge mausoleum and monument for Spanish Civil War dead (from both sides). The monks are there to pray and work for peace and reconciliation, but now as in the 1930s, this Is the last thing the left wants. The leftists were violent, vicious and implacable then and they are so still today.

“Franco saved Spain. No wonder the Communists hate him.”

I maintain a similar belief that Augusto Pinochet saved Chile. That said, the pain of salvation endures.

The communists killed a dozen bishops - and hundreds of nuns, thousands of priests - when they had their way. Lay people were killed for possessing religious articles (medals, rosaries and such).

Wikipedia is deceptive in showing the Spanish Republican flag with the monarchist symbol in the center; they had no use for the monarchy, and most flags I’ve seen were just the three bars - no Bourbon crest/symbol.

Yep. Franco could fairly be described as a reactionary. He wasn’t really a fascist though the Commies have tried to claim he was. Whatever his faults, he was a lot better than the Communists and he left Spain in vastly better shape than the Commies would have had they won.

No question Pinochet saved Chile. Like Franco, he left the country in vastly better shape than he found it. He also stepped aside peacefully for a Democratically elected government to replace him. Once again, I have a hard time imagining the Commies doing that - just look at Cuba or Venezuela.

It is not a monarchist symbol. In fact, the coat of arms used in the flag of the Second Spanish Republic even removed a crown that was included in the flag for the First Spanish Republic.
