Has ever been in an uninteresting movie? Not all of them were genius, but I can’t recall that I have seen an absolute stinker. Definitely never one that was worse because of him. How about the villain character in Joe Kidd? Tremendous.
Freegards
Reportedly the most universal actor ever.
Gene Hackman maybe second.
Best dam gunfight ever..for a movie.
I thought Superman and the sequels weren’t very interesting, come on. But both actors never made a movie more bad for sure. Hackman didn’t get a chance to be in all those TV shows before he started movie work, at least that I have seen. Duvall was superb in all that old TV stuff.
Freegards
Under-rated movie many have never heard of.
“Gus is on the prod”
Always preferred “I love the smell of napalm in the morning....smells like victory”
But Hackman, like Duvall could play any role, no matter the genre, so could Denzel Washington.
I’m surprised no one has yet mentioned Duvall’s role as Tom Hagen in the first two Godfather movies. Can’t help but wonder if Godfather 3 would have been better with him in it. Choosing not to was probably a good idea. The movie was a stinker and Robert Duvall don’t do stinkers.
Here's him saying it.
I’ve always wanted to hear the entire ‘how to be a man’ speech, which they don’t really give you in the movie - though what Duvall does give of it to the little boy is quite good ;-)
They probably could—but Hackman and Washington didn’t do a bunch of character acting in popular TV shows in the beginning of their career and beyond. Of course part of that is the era Duvall came up in. But hey Babe Ruth could really pitch too.
Freegards
The movie was BS and sucked, but Duvall was most excellent.
I had dinner with him back in the early 90’s, when I attended a three day private law enforcement seminar in Philly. Sat right next to him, and he looked as familiar as all get-out, but I couldn’t quite connect the face and the name until a couple of years later. (I was never a TV junkie - it took a little while for the proverbial light bulb to go off over my head.) He was a featured player in some onstage scenarios emphasizing apprehension, and tort law. Call it ‘Twelve Angry Men’ meets ‘The Rockford Files’. Very pleasant, personable man, very low-key, and none of that ‘Don’t you know who I am?’ pretense whatsoever. The conversation drifted to football, and he was, of course, a big Houston Oilers fan. Very nice guy, it felt like he was ‘one of the gang’.
I just went to netflix and put several in my que.
Im really surprised you would support the Obummers by supporting Netflix. I put up with the Susan Rice being part of Netflix, but when they gave Obummer a position on the board ( read kickback), I had to pull any association with that company. Try Vudu for movies.
Dont support liberal democRAT enterprises.
Yeah I know, but, netflix has given me hours upon hours of entertainment. Gunsmoke, Rawhide, Have gun will travel etc.I get those dvd’s every week. Plus many classic movies in my mailbox and it is cheap.
Agreed. I was a member since the start. Binge watched so many good movies and series, but I just could not continue to pay money to a company that stuck it in my face that they hated me as a customer.
Willie Nelson saw an early screening of ‘Tender Mercies’ and contacted Duvall and offered to help with publicity. Duvall, who was a Nelson fan, contacted the studio, and the studio heads didn’t know who Nelson was. They told Duvall they didn’t want or need Nelson’s help. Duvall was disgusted and years later he said in an interview that movie studio people didn’t know anything about anything.
