I remember his interview when he did probably the best modern western movie in OPEN RANGE and he berated the Canadian supporting cast instead of having a majority American cast.

If you haven't seen his 1997 film The Apostle then you must.
An amazing movie about grace and redemption. Duvall wrote and tried to get it made for years. In the end he put up his own money into bankrolling it, and starred in and directed it. Within half an hour of the premiere at a Toronto film festival studio bigwigs left the theater and began haggling for the distribution rights. Not long after the screening ended that night October Films had bought the film.
Also has Farrah Fawcett, Billy Bob Thornton, and June Carter Cash.

One of the actors who makes anything he’s in worth looking up to watch. And there aren’t many of those.

He was in a movie where he played a Cuban in Miami, he had the accent down perfect. You’d never know it was Robert Duval.

He was a college graduate and only rose to the rank of PFC. And was only in for 2 years. WTF?

I didn’t know he was a descendant of Robert E. Lee ... maybe that’s why he was so good in the part in “Gods & Generals”. I have to hand it to their makeup and costume people — it would have been tough to tell him from the original.

Exactly-—and don’t forget his early role in “To Kill a Mockingbird” when none of us had ever even heard of him.
