In the face of a global refugee crisis, Christians from Pope Francis to American evangelicals have tried to inspire sympathy for people fleeing violence and persecution by pointing out that Jesus himself was once a refugee.
The Christian Gospels suggest that Jesus family fled to Egypt shortly after he was born to escape a massacre ordered by a tyrannical king. The family lived in Egypt until the death of that king.
For many Christians, the fact that the founder of their faith was a refugee means that they are called to welcome and serve migrants and refugees today.
But according to Paula White, spiritual adviser to President Donald Trump, thats not the right way to interpret this Biblical story.
Earlier this month, White spoke on the Christian Broadcasting Network about visiting a foster care facility in Bristow, Virginia, that was reportedly taking care of several migrant children. Asked to reflect on the Bible verses that came to mind during her visit, the televangelist said that many Christians misconstrue the story about Jesus escape to Egypt.
White claimed that although Jesus was a refugee, he didnt cross borders illegally.
I think so many people have taken Biblical Scriptures out of context on this, to say stuff like, Well, Jesus was a refugee, White said in the CBN interview published Monday. Yes, he did live in Egypt for three-and-a-half years. But it was not illegal. If he had broken the law, then he would have been sinful and he would not have been our Messiah.

Paula White, and the whole Prosperity Gospel, is nonsense, but the people trying to use this argument to defend third world immigration have no conception of what the Gospel is about.
#1 - Jesus wasnt a refugee. His family was moving because high taxes.
#2 - Jesus obeyed the law. Even when he was sentenced to death for a crime he didnt commit.
Satan can quote Scripture when it suits his purpose.
Not a fan of White, but she is right. Roman immigration rules were different than ours. Jesus was fleeing Herod, and broke no laws
Why is Paula White the spiritual advisor to the president? That’s a bit dangerous!
He was not a refugee.
Read Matthew 2:13-16
#2 - Jesus obeyed the law. Even when he was sentenced to death for a crime he didnt commit.
The Pharisees would disagree with you.
Jesus and His family were fleeing Jerusalem because of a threat to Jesus's life. If that isn't a refugee then what is?
..more importantly the President has people like Robert Jefress and Franklin Graham in his counsel—otherwise I would be concerned...
I am not religious and I am not conversant in the gospel. However I find it hard to believe that there’s anything in the Bible that indicates we have any sort of moral obligation to turn this country into a third-world craphole.
And in a practical sense there’s no evidence that turning this country into third world craphole is going to do anyone else any good in the first place.
This may be a poor analogy but if someone is drowning and it is impossible for you to save them, you aren’t doing them any good if you jump in and drown with them.
America has always admitted refugees but we can’t absorb them by the millions and we can’t take in criminals.
If we are flooded by 3rd world people, we’ll become a 3rd world country. What’s good about that?
You see, you don't have to live like a refugee
(Don't have to live like a refugee)
Somewhere, somehow, somebody
Must have kicked you around some
Tell me why you wanna lay there
And revel in your abandon
Honey, it don't make no difference to me, baby
Everybody's had to fight to be free
(Don't have to live like a refugee)
Even if he had broken a law, and he didnt, breaking a law isnt necessarily a sin
According to Websters Dictionary that is exactly what it is.
What folks are missing in the “fled to Egypt” when they try to make the “immigrant” argument, is that both Israel and Egypt were under Roman rule as parts of the Roman Empire, thus they were moving from one part of the Empire to another, rather like US citizens legally moving from one state to another, such as from Maryland to Indiana.
Let not your heart be troubled! Jesus will soon settle this once and for all.
Ummm... Jesus was also an INFANT at the time.
His PARENTS took him to Egypt - AND THEN BACK HOME.
Jesus had no say in it.
Its a stupid premise to begin with.
Democrats want to quote the Bible when it suits them, but not as it applies to marriage or pro-life.
