Be thankful that Megalania is extinct - in the past Australia had giant monitor lizards that made today’s Komodo Dragon look pint-sized in comparison.

There had to be a lot of the early settlers get eaten before they figured out the things were dangerous. Lots of things are extremely dangerous.
