I wonder if social media has caused an absolute increase in the number of people who die doing stupid stuff, or whether we just know about more of them.

Both are correct.

Youtube is drawing people to do more stupid things, in the interest of attention.

Social media publizes the stupidity, and we notice this more often now (I would guess I see it twice a week now on average...some guy or gal dead).

I noticed a couple of days ago....some rural region in India....went into a murder episode because of fake news getting out by WhatsApp message. Several folks dead because of public messages made, and the authorities weren’t quick enough to prevent them.
