It’s official: Oak Ridge has fastest computer

Oak Ridge’s Summit supercomputer, designed to reclaim the title “world’s fastest,” has officially done so.

The designation came Tuesday at the ISC High Performance conference in Frankfurt, Germany, according to a news release from Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Eight times more powerful than its predecessor, Titan, the Summit supercomputer reclaims the title from China’s Sunway TaihuLight.

The article stated that during a test, the Summit computer reached 122.3 petaflops. That's PDF (pretty dang fast).

The IBM PC (5150): The simplest configuration had 16K on-board RAM, used an audio cassette to load and save data - the floppy drive was optional, and a hard drive was not supported. Extra ram (64K, 128K and 256K) could be added. It used an Intel 8088 microprocessor with an 8bit external bus (16bit internal) running at 4.77Mhz.

LOL, probably so. The previous fastest at Oak Ridge (Titan) is a Cray, and it’s still fourth fastest in the world.

Check it out.

Not only is "Summit" significantly faster than "Sunway TaihuLight", it gets there with about 1/5 as many cores and just over half as much power.

According to the article, It runs a standard Linux operating system from Red Hat in Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

It’s massively parallel, so probably not.
