Photos of a female hunter from Kentucky proudly showing off the results of her “dream hunt” – a dead black giraffe in South Africa – have ignited a firestorm across social media after being picked up by a local African media outlet.
“White American savage who is partly a Neanderthal comes to Africa and shoot down a very rare black giraffe courtesy of South Africa stupidity,” read the June 2018 tweet, posted by Africa Digest. “Her name is Tess Thompson Talley. Please share.”
The controversial images, which were posted by a Kentucky woman identified as Tess Thompson Talley a year ago, show her standing proudly beside a dead giraffe bull along with the caption: “Prayers for my once in a lifetime dream hunt came true today! Spotted this rare black giraffe bull and stalked him for quite a while. I knew it was the one. He was over 18 years old, 4000 lbs. and was blessed to be able to get 2000 lbs. of meat from him.”
Trophy hunting is a legal practice in a number of African countries, including South Africa, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
“The giraffe I hunted was the South African sub-species of giraffe. The numbers of this sub-species is actually increasing due, in part, to hunters and conservation efforts paid for in large part by big game hunting. The breed is not rare in any way other than it was very old. Giraffes get darker with age,” said Talley, in an email to Fox News.
She points out that the giraffe she killed was 18, too old to breed, and had killed three younger bulls who were able to breed, causing the herd’s population to decrease. Now, with the older giraffe dead, the younger bulls are able to continue to breed and can increase the population

Weirdos like this will pay them more to kill it themselves. There is a market for killing big animals. I’m not into it either, but it seems like in this case it was better to be culled anyhow. May as well let some nut do it I guess. I wonder if you have to pay a lot more to actually go out by yourself and kill a wild prime animal. You would think there would be a market for that too, and more desirable in some ways?

Managed harvest brings about healthier herds that are less likely to be ravaged by wasting disease and other contagious problems. That way more animals get to keep their animal spirit longer.
A hunting instructor once told me that 40 percent of all deer starve to death. The percentage for giraffes is also probably high.
You clearly did not read the article. That animal emptied three other “vessels” this season alone.
Hint, she did not mail back a ton of frozen meat.
Another hint, it is nowhere as easy or as risk free as you have assumed.

Right, but are you the one going to pay money to cull someone else’s herd? I guess it depends on the difficulty level. If hunting this thing was difficult I can see it more OK I guess. If it was like someone showing up and offering to kill and slaughter your pigs and to pay you for the privilege...
In any case I don’t blame the natives for cashing in on this weirdness.

Culling to prevent starvation/disease etc. - Okay
Trophy hunting - No.
My family members were hunters and they ate what they killed. In our family, we just wouldn’t understand collecting “trophies” when the entire purpose of hunting is to succeed in bringing down prey. “Trophy” hunting is like a “participation award” for showing up, or not failing completely.
I have also hunted, nothing larger than small game, and in some cases I have eaten what I have hunted. Dove, squirrel, rabbit.
Recall that this hunter said she got 2000 lb (1 TON!) of meat off of the giraffe. That's a lot of trips to the grocery store.

And the reason they starve to death is because during harsh winters, there are just too many deer for the amount of scarce food that is available- in some areas you will see trees decimated by deer that eat the smaller branches off them about head high- you’ll be able to look through the trees down low and there isn’t a branch to be found because there are far too many deer and not enough food-
So yes, it’s true- about 40% do starve to death.
I would imagine in africa that the same goes for giraffes and elephants- National geographic did a story about too many elephants and not enough food once- and related how elephants would wipe out any food source and then would starve to death- and when elephants wipe out food sources- they wipe out trees which are necessary for many many species- so other species in the area suffer and die as well
There is a lot to consider in game management- and anti-hunters complaining about trophy hunting don’t realize that it provides a very necessary service to both animals in the regions AND to the economy where the animals are hunted- Many otherwise poor people make good money durign hunting season and are able ot feed their families well for a period as a result of income in the region from hunters who need lodging, laundry services, places to eat, guides, suppliers, help with hunting expeditions- etc- and many times the meat from the kills go to feed villages-
Here big mistake was to not show photos of her aborted child. Had she done THAT, she’d be feted and celebrated./S

I believe that no meat will go to waste. The guide will make sure that his village or someone gets the meat and it’s distributed or sold. And the fees the hunter paid will support many people and the ‘tag’ will allow the govt’ to pay for park staff.

MEAT and AFRICAN PEOPLE
In the off season or summer time, many of the landowners, guides and even other people who work as professional hunters will harvest animals in “Cull “hunts or population control hunts. So the meat will end up being harvested one way or another. Orders come in for 10 Giraffe, 20 Zebra, 20 wildebeest etc. this is just for food. So the Cull hunters then contract to land owners to reduce herd numbers where they need to be. Without hunting, the herds will grow to uncontrollable numbers. Hang on hang on you anti’s… I will get to your claims of predators and natural selection shortly.
The reason that the numbers do so well is 100% due to the efforts of these land owners and farmers and The Professional Hunting Industry. Without them the animals would have no value and they would be eradicated due to the need to find other ways to make money on the land. “

I understand where you are coming from. All I “hunted” in college were cougars..
