The play began slowly, with a neat corner kick to one of Portugals midfielders four minutes into last weeks World Cup match against Morocco. The drama built with a lob to the six-yard box, tantalizingly close to the goal. And it reached a crescendo with a a diving header by Cristiano Ronaldo that sent the ball to the back of Moroccos net. One to 0.
Who gets to narrate such moments of high athletic drama became a subject of controversy this week when Vicki Sparks, a British sports journalist who made history by becoming the first woman to commentate on a live World Cup match for British television, faced criticism for her high-pitched tone.

I proofread court cases for extra $$. The most recent was a gender-discrimination case: apparently an employee was fired for being difficult and incompetent, but she blamed it on the male supervisor.
A witness, the employee’s mentor — and also a woman — had advised her to lower her voice when interacting with the public, because a masculine voice sounds more professional. Of course, the employee went ballistic and the witness got blamed as part of the “male” conspiracy.
If not for feminism, this employee couldn’t get a job mopping floors. She refused to hear the truth either about herself or the real world — that shrill, high-pitched voices don’t get you far. (Also attitudes — she had had very public meltdowns. Definitely a nutcase.)
I would like to hear someone like Zsa Zsa or was that Eva call, announce a football game. They would make a great team!
