Father Sergei is of Don Cossack heritage, meaning he descends from the warrior clans who once defended Russias borders. He espouses a muscular version of Christianity, organising classes in Cossack culture and regular military training for the young people who attend his church. At one recent summer school, children eagerly undertook lessons in minesweeping, weapons handling and hand-to-hand combat. They may have some practical application: in Rostov-on-Don, the fighting in Ukraine is close enough to be occasionally audible.Sounds like a fun church. I would have loved this when I was a kid as it would have kept me happily in church.
So much for "turn the other cheek" with these Cossacks.
