Goats help clear brush to reduce wildfire fuel

Dozens of four legged friends have been brought to Deer Canyon preserve to eat as much as they can.

"We have an environmental land manager that's under contract here, we have about 180 boar, spanish and nubian goats that are out here, that are assisting with brush clearance."

The goats are part of the city's plan to clear thick, dangerous fuels that could ignite.

Anaheim fire says this two month process is much more efficient using these animals.

"It would take a long time, we would have to rotate crews repeatedly because of the terrain and how hot it is, where with the goats, they can work all day long."

Video from the drone shows the stark difference between areas the goats have already eaten and where they have yet to go.

Yeah and they are quiet about it too, at least quiet compared to a brush hog. They will put scratches on your car, they love to climb stuff. They would be up in the skinniest of saplings with the tree bent over, looking ridiculous suspended a foot off the ground, delicately nibbling leaves. It looked like cartoon stuff.

...Never noticed inordinate fecal output, ha..

The goats do not have high-tech matter transporters hidden in their innards.

If you put a ton of brush in the front end, a ton of something else is going to come out the back end.

That’s what they say. But try to give them a hamburger and they’ll say what they really need is $27.13 to buy a bus ticket home to Santa Barbara.

My years ago my cousin bought a house in the outskirts of Trumball, Conn. which was thick with brush. He couldn’t use a lawnmower so he rented a goat, put it on a long chain attached to a spike in the middle of the area.

It worked and the goat lived to eat another day.

I once had an old goat for a mother-in-law. I should have put her on a chain and made her clear something. She needed to lose a few pounds but as luck would have it, I had no land to clear. Some goats have all the luck.

I recall watching a golf tournament a couple of years ago that showed the course used goats on some of the hillsides to eat the plants/grass growing there. It helped to reduce the risk of fires and was much cheaper than having humans do the removal.

I own three goats. I have no idea why this is being said. My yard is not full of black pebbles. They stay on 1 to 1.5 acres.

Maintenance workers from a college, Michigan State I think rebelled when the college brought goats in to clear a field of poison ivy. It was taking away union jobs.

I just love goats, they can be the most wonderful of pets.

Raise them from babies and they simply adore you.

I actually pity people who have not had the opportunity to be friends with a lovable goat :-)

Exactly!

I love goats but there is NOTHING at all wrong with using them as a food source also.

BBQ goat is amazing :-)

Just be humane when transitioning them from happy weed eating friend to BBQ for the family.

God smiles on this, he gave us dominion over all the beasts of the Earth.

Humans are omnivores, meat is very necessary for our well-being!

Bingo! Wonderful animals. Just use some brain cells on the number and purpose.

A tad off topic, but years ago I read in one of those Mother Earth magazines about a guy in Missouri how had a small tract of hard soil land overgrown with brush and wanted some suggestions on economically clearing it out.

Some old farmer suggested pigs, saying they not only would clear the area in no time, they would roto-till and fertilize it as well.

A follow-up letter thanked the farmer, saying they worked better than any machinery.
