Belmont controversy erupts: Did alliance ensure a Justify victory?
NY Post ^ | 6/10/2018 | Tom Pedulla

Justify’s emergence as the only undefeated Triple Crown champion after Seattle Slew and the 13th horse overall to complete the rare sweep went from a feel-good story to one awash in controversy on Sunday.

Queens native Mike Repole, co-owner of fourth-place Vino Rosso and last-place Noble Indy in the field of 10, hopes Belmont Park stewards will question jockey Florent Geroux about his handling of Restoring Hope, Justify’s stablemate, for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert.

When there is money involved, you can bet that there is some anti-collusion regulation from somebody making it a no-no... (Yes, pun intended.)

That is so good!!! I have no doubt this owner is probably a Democrat! They never can accept defeat with dignity!

The time to protest was right after the race. No one did because Raising Hope didn’t block or interfere with any other horse. Justify led wire to wire and won the race. Sore losers are now whining. Sad.

Silly. I need only go as fast as I need to win the race.

It was no secret these two horses were from the same stable and trainer.

The commentators said it was perfectly legal for Restoring Hope to help Justify.

After all, when we know we are Justified by grace, it Restores Hope. Justify and Restore Hope - they kind of go together...

:)

Justify was the best horse in the race. That’s why he won.

Long ago they loosened the entry requirement for betting. Previously, horses trained by the same trainer had to be entered as an entry for betting purposes. Horses from the same barn continued to be entered as entries. It is also not unusual to have an entry from the same owner composed of a front runner or pace setter to set a face early pace for a more seasoned entry mate.

The issue in this race is that one of the entries “blocked” a lane. In a small field that this was, it is a ludicrous argument especially given a mile and half race. Yes it did look like the Indy horse forced a horse wider than they wished for it to run. A jockey is paid to be careful not to have it happen. Justify was the better horse on Saturday. If someone lost it was poor racing luck, nothing more.

Sour grapes on the part of this owner, IMO.

When some of these trainers have over 100 horses in their ‘stables’, there will be no fields large enough for the racing venues to stay in operation if more than one horse from any trainer can run in any single race at a time. That will wipe out the sport. When a trainer is successful, he draws more & more owners who want his services. IF this owner gets his way, that would be infringing on the rights of the owners & trainers to perform their jobs.

These are 10 young 1100# or more stallions-—with jockey’s riding them with only their balance & their boots in the stirrups for control. These horses can bump each other with absolutely NO help from their jockeys. The noise of the crowd can set them off at any time, and the Belmont had a big crowd.

I have owned a number of horses in the past 32 years, pursuing the sport of endurance riding on horses. I had one mare for just shy of 30 years who could trot all day at 6 MPH on a jeep trail, and IF she saw a lizard or a snake, she could change lanes without any speed decrease & leave you in mid air until you hit the ground. IF I hadn’t been riding all those years with Australian Stock Saddles, I would have spent more time on the ground. She got me totally unseated twice. I rode her many miles, & she finished over 1000 miles of sanctioned rides of 50 miles length each.

I watched the race very closely. Justify broke out of the gate & was IMMEDIATELY in front. He led the race wire to wire. The best laid plans of all the other owners & jockeys just couldn’t keep up with him. Justify looked like it was just a easy romp for him. I would love to know how HIS stride compares to Secretariat.

The real hard runner of the day was Gronkowski. Broke very poorly out of the gate, lolly-gagged around at the FAR back of the field, then found the gear he wanted & finished 2nd.
Also- Gronkowski had never raced in the USA before—only Europe & had never raced on dirt before—only turf. Remarkable, IMO. I think we will see him do very well in the future.

IF that horse could find running room, so could any or all of the others, IMO.

Sounds like collusion...

Maybe they should just call it the “Tour de Belmont”.

Baffert has been training race horses all of his life-—he started with Quarter horses & switched to Thorobreds.

He must be doing something right. He is known for having his horses in very fit condition again & gain.

too funny...a trainer and owner whining about not being able to beat the winner with THEIR 2 HORSES!!... because the winning trainer and his 2 horses won the race...Justify beat 35 horses in the 3 races...he whipped everything they threw at him....including Good Magic, the Eclipse winner for champion 2 year old...plus he beat him twice. its stunning what Justify has done in only 6 races since February..just amazing.

Secretariat and I disagree, see his Belmont performance. Only slackers don't perform at their best.

Wrong. Horses from the same stable run together a lot. It’s not uncommon.
