Shocking satellite photos show entire towns obliterated after Guatemala's 'Volcano of Fire' buried them in tons of ash that crushed hundreds of homes and burned 300 people alive

Volcan de Fuego erupted on Sunday and again on Tuesday, sending ash and smoke 20,000ft into the air

Pyroclastic flows destroyed at least seven towns and turned green canyons into grey devastation

Rescuers dug up 99 bodies with at least 197 people missing and, they believe, almost certainly dead

Searches are hampered by rain, mudslides, poisonous gas, and 1,300F temperatures just below the surface

Giant clouds of superheated smoke and ash burned people alive and buried entire towns in a deadly volcanic eruption in Guatemala that killed almost 100 people.

Shocking satellite photos of before and after Sunday's eruption show whole suburbs wiped off the map as hundreds of houses collapsed when tons of falling ash crushed them.

What was once a collection of green canyons, hillsides and farms was reduced to grey devastation by fast-moving avalanches of super-heated muck that roared into the tightly knit villages on the mountain's flanks.

Volcan de Fuego, meaning 'Volcano of Fire' spewed a 'curtain' of ash 20,000ft into the air and sent rapid pyroclastic flows through at least seven nearby towns in the biggest eruption for four decades.

A couple of slide photos showing a before and after as you slide.

We will most likely never know the true death toll.

Some disturbingly sad photos at the link

This is pretty bad and it should be getting more coverage but Hawaiian neighborhoods are more important to cover.sarc

Guatemala can’t seem to catch a break. They were already poor. This is where many of the MS13’s come from. For some, gang membership has replaced regular employment as a way to provide.

I am told by many hispanic friends that the Guatemalans are one of the Black Sheep of Central America.
Nicaraguans and Hondurans consider themselves light years ‘better’ that the Guats. Why, I cannot say. But then, most regions seem to have a self imposed pecking order of national worth.

Guatemala became independent in 1824, everyone else in Central America gained their freedom later.

Honduras became independent in 1838.

The looking down on Guatemala is probably a function of national pride because the “Guats” were the first to break from Mexico.

Heck the Hawaiian volcano is already off the news cycle. They’re bored by it because they can’t figure out how to blame Trump. If it wasn’t for internet news and videos we wouldn’t know much about the latest news at all. They spend 5 seconds on it. Gotta spend another 10 minutes hating Trump.

We will most likely never know the true death toll.

Not until they excavate it 2,000 years from now.

I remember something about an immigrant work site. The Brazilians control the money. The Mexicans run the job. The El Salvadorians do the landscaping. The Nicaraguans run the food service. The Colombians provide the entertainment and the Guatemalans clean the shitters.

I can't remember it exactly but a Mexican said it.

I think the Hondurans ran security.

Lol! See what I mean? Guatemala can’t get no respect!
That sounds like the Caste system in India which is supposedly outlawed now. They have a certain group called ‘The Untouchables’ who are given most of the dirty jobs.
And I mean MEGA-dirty!!!

I watched a little short about this Indian lady who cleaned the public latrines. She had a kid strapped to her back as she worked. Her ancestors had cleaned the same latrine and she said her kids would too. Being a Hindu she hoped her next life would be better. The latrine she was picking the poo up at was open and NASTY.

Dirrty Deeds, done dirt cheap!
Many people will find horrible situations tolerable if they decide to accept it as their lot in life. The fatalistic view. The Latrine Lady probably never spent much time on the Internet learning how nicely others were living only a few kilometers away. Ignorant bliss, with all due respect.

One of the photos with the before and after shows what seems to be a pretty nice golf course - surprised me. Lots of horror at the link.

Chiapas declared independence from spain in 1821. As memory serves, it joined with the other Central America states in their first go-round with federated union. Mexico absorbed all the territories, but with the start of the Mexican republic (the first one) offered all (apart from Chiapas) the option of independence. They tried again. Didn’t work that time either.

Because volcanoes are exceedingly rare people underestimate the speed and severity of danger. Pyroclastic flows, superheated gas (2,000 F) with rock and ash, can travel nearly 500mph. Lahars, volcanic mudflows, can be 20mph. A “wait and see” decision is really a “wait and die” decision.

The 1902 Pelee volcano’s pyroclastic flow killed the entire 30,000 city of Saint-Pierre (except 2 people). Twelve days later another pyroclastic flow killed 2,000 rescuers, engineers, and mariners.

Somehow it must be Trump's fault that the Guatemalans didn't get evacuated. Has to be, because no a single person in the path of the eruption in Hawaii failed to escape.
