Republican Rep. Diane Black of Tennessee recently cited pornography, along with the deterioration of the family and violent movies, as a contributing factor to gun violence in schools.
Black made the remarks during a listening session with local pastors last week.
"Why do we see kids being so violent? What's out there? What makes them do that?" Black said.
"Because, as a nurse, I go back to root cause. And I think it's a couple things," Black said, listing off deterioration of the family and violent movies, before mentioning pornography.
"Pornography. It's available. It's available on the shelf when you walk in the grocery store. Yeah, you have to reach up to get it, but there's pornography there," Black says in the audio. "All of this is available without parental guidance."
She adds, "And I think that's a big part of the root cause, that we see so many young people that have mental illness get caught in these places." In the audio, Black does not detail what it is about pornography that she believes contributes to school shootings.
"I think the context is pretty clear," Black's campaign spokesman Chris Hartline told CNN Tuesday. "Diane believes the breakdown of families and communities plays a significant role in instances of school violence."

I have a kind of theory about the "solidarity of goodness" and a corresponding "solidarity of evil." Every good thing strengthens and builds up all good things, and every evil thing is a factor of all bad things.
Sometimes the connections are a little obscure. However, I'm pretty sure that porn is in league with indulging extreme impulses, selfishness, contempt --- interior states related to murder --- and not on the side of gentleness, honor and truth.
I had to laugh at that.
Not sure why, but it's kind of funny.
I suspect Black was taken out of context. She was listing various things she thought were responsible, and the media jumped on porn.
The bigger picture is that there are many people who live in a fantasy world constructed out of violent movies, video games, social media, and perhaps pornography.
When I was in high school in the mid/late 50’s they blamed Elvis Pressley and rock and roll in general for the decline and coarsening of civility.
I think the more correct answer, the most correct answer, is a school structure is sort of a mini-version of society, so for chidlren and teenagers, its their everything. And the social media contruct extends that bubble even further.
And just like in our greater society, there are people who have mental illnesses and/or prone to violence. Their illness may be genetic and/or born out of trauma. Thus, identifying those people at risk is important, to get them help, and two add protective messures to schools.
As for video games, porn, tv... look at the Call of Duty series, did a quick google search, the franchise has had over a Quarter of a Billion Units sold. If it is inharently making people do dangerous things, then wouldn’t the math show a correlation to the amount of games out there being played over the years? Same thing with porn. The consumption is huge.
If censorship is the answer, I think that’s dangerous. We already had age requirements for porn, for video games, to see a rated R movie, for freaking guns for that matter.
“OTOH,an inability to achieve a certain closeness with the local young ladies? I could go with that.”
If that were the case then millions of men would be shooting up the countryside.
“Where the heck does she shop for groceries?”
They must have private little booths in those stores.
I disagree...
There is now no accountability...If you commit a crime, you may go to jail if you get caught...If not, you’re home free...No conscience...
No heaven, no hell...No problem...
When I was coming up the Ten Commandments were posted in the hallways of the schools...Even if you weren’t in a religious family, you knew there was someone up there who would somehow hold you accountable for your actions at some point in time...
Something tells me shes probably defining pornography pretty loosely. Like my grandmother used to do. If youd ever ask her, shed seen a lot of pornographic films, like Jerry McGuire, Pretty Woman, the latest episode All my children, etc.
Breakdown of the family came from Satan. All the rest follows.
“She is right, but the people of TN are so often wrong.”
Bible belt?
“”Because, as a nurse, I go back to root cause.”
As long as you get the right dx.
YES!!!
Pornography takes our sexual urge, which is designed to form physical and psychological bonds between husband and wife (the physical bonds include children), and shatters it. It turns the sexual urge inward to the self, rather than outward to the spouse. It fosters poor impulse control. It encourages the reduction of others to tools for self gratification. No possible good can come from this.
I would say in a normal, healthy environment that porn or violent video games are inconsequential as kids develop a proper balance and priority system.
More to blame IMO are the lessening of emphasis on God in our lives and broken families. Kids need to have proper boundaries set from a young age.
Symptom or cause......I say symptom
I suggest that it is both symptom and cause (along with other factors) in a nasty societal positive feedback loop.
“Like my grandmother used to do. If youd ever ask her, shed seen a lot of pornographic films, like Jerry McGuire, Pretty Woman, the latest episode All my children, etc.”
Peyton place was “porn” in the 50’s and henry miller’s works were banned. “8 pagers” were the end of the world.!
Very interesting and true. Our kids never really lived in video game dreamworld. The boys have games and play occasionally, but not daily.
I doubt my daughters ever picked up a controller.
We never let them just layabout, but when they got their first jobs, it was amazing how quickly they gained in responsibility.
Most were working by about 16. One of them we didn’t make work because he was involved in some activities to help with his career aspirations. He wanted to be a rocket engineer, so we had him on robotics teams etc. (BTW, he just graduated as an aerospace engineer)
When it came time for a job, he got one working for a contractor and jumped right in.
Work is good and necessary for the development of a young person
Deadly stew.
Turn the positive feedback loop around a few times, and you have "Stormy Daniels", who made a career of abusing her sexuality in front of a camera for pay, being celebrated shamelessly on "mainstream" "news" headlines and selling her brand of perfume.
Yeah, we've come a long way, baby.
A long way down the drain.
Nope, it's the cafeteria food and that stupid Moochelle Obama's "nutritious lunch" program crap...
