It was never like Leave It To Beaver anywhere - if you mean an idealized “idea” of a perfect genteel family with no profound vices. Even some of the plot lines of some episodes of the show do a better job with reality than people’s idea of the show. There have always been broken families, alcoholism, infidelities, abuse and white trash behavior.
The difference, in those days, was that public acceptance and glorification of evil was not being forced upon us. Bad behavior, perversion etc... was recognized as bad behavior and was marginalized and frowned upon.
