I believe the 1924 Washington Senators were the first team invited over to the White House, visiting Calvin Coolidge.

I tend to agree that since the 1980s....this whole business has gotten out of hand.

I seem to remember in the 60’s and 70’s the winning coach might get a phone call from the White House but that was it.
With Senators and House members regularly visiting the WH there are already enough overpaid prima donnas there.
No need to import more from the “sports” world.
