Miss America is scrapping its swimsuit competition and will no longer judge contestants based on physical appearance, the organization announced Tuesday.

"We are no longer a pageant," Gretchen Carlson, the first former Miss America to be named chair of the Board of Trustees of the Miss America Organization, said on "GMA." "We are a competition."

Miss America has always been someone who women would pick rather than men. Often there are Miss America contestants that have weird smiles or are classically beautiful but not in the least sexy.

Playboy understands that small women are sexy. Most of their models are quite short. Victoria secret understands that hips and a chest are important too. So their models usually have both. The female equivalent to Mr. Universe pageants understand that muscles can be sexy too.

But Miss America has been generally understood to be the women that women aspire to be. Rather than the women that men crave.
