Maybe you don't really like pizza. Crust and sauce are the only essential ingredients, though there are sauceless cheese and crust (white clam pie) variants. In Philly you can get "tomato pie" which is basically a thick crust square (a.k.a. Sicilian style) pizza without the cheese. It's tasty. The picture below shows it with grated cheese on it, that's not typical in my experience.

If you are in the apizza capital of New Haven CT, and go to the best places (Sally's Apizza and Modern Apizza) and order a plain pizza, you will get a thin (but NON-CARDOARDY) crust (roundish at Modern, more oval at Sally's), sauce and parmesan. Cheese is a topping.
