(CNN Money) — Back in February, Dick’s Sporting Goods made a bold decision to stop selling assault style rifles and high capacity magazines, and to raise the minimum age to purchase a gun to 21.
Executives there braced for pain. Instead they got good news.
Dick’s Sporting Goods stock price surged by as much as 27% after it reported stronger than expected quarterly sales and profit Wednesday.
It’s the first measure of their decision to pull away from some guns.

Dick’s is a big operation and guns have been a small part of it.
What is unrefutable is Dick’s would have done better than 27% if they had not got into gun politics.

Some of those sales probably came about because Sports Authority went out of business.
I wonder in the details if they might be playing games with their books, how they are reporting things. I cannot imagine they shut down part of their business, yet grow.
And how much of the increased sales is do to companies they have acquired rather than existing in-store growth?

Ridiculous propaganda. Dick’s opened a bunch of new stores. Their same store sales were -2.5%. That is an awful number. Gaining more sales at greater cost subtracts rather than adds to a retailer’s bottom line. The return on each asset gets softer even as you’re plowing more money in.
Obviously somebody was desperate to report “good” news for Dick’s. Too bad they don’t have the slightest clue what they’re talking about.

Me. I went to Academy Sports just a week or two ago.
Just goes to show that most people don’t buy that style of gun. Dicks has a good fishing dept. Plus it’s the economy stupid.
give it time....give it time....surprising truth is many outdoor enthusiasts...running,hiking, fishing,climbing,horseback riding, camping...are also hunters with guns....Outside mag stated that a few yrs ago..
A lot of this is undoubtedly Leftists supporting the store because of Dick’s anti-gun moves. The question is, how long will that effect last? That kind of stuff tends to wear off once the novelty is gone.
