Darlene to the rescue? Roughly 72 hours after cancelling Roseanne amid controversy, ABC is looking to possibly keep the franchise alive with a spinoff centered on Sara Gilbert’s acid-tongued single mom, TVLine has confirmed.
The standalone Darlene series was one of five offshoots proposed by TVLine in the wake of Roseanne‘s spectacular fall on Tuesday. ABC could not be reached for comment.
It was three days ago that ABC announced it was scrapping the series’ already-greenlit 11th season after its titular star Roseanne Barr tweeted a racist “joke” about Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett. In announcing the cancellation, ABC president Channing Dungey called Barr’s comment “abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values.” Gilbert, meanwhile, said she was “disappointed” in Barr’s actions “to say the least,” while showrunner Bruce Helford said he was “horrified and saddened” by the remark.

He can’t carry *that* show as a lead, but he’s had some pretty good films. Not King Ralph of course, but he was excellent as Babe Ruth and that movie where he played that 50s movie theater operator was pretty good.
But, yeah, he isn’t carrying Roseanne w/o Roseanne.
That’s not my point. He didn’t comment on Roseanne the other day, but this new show doesn’t involve Roseanne so him reportedly being “very interested” shows disloyalty.

I cannot tolerate Gilbert. Ha ha she’s the one person I wanted off the show.
I guess, but he gave Rosanne 11 years of his life. I mean I get that he owes her but he did do the work. Do you have to be 100 percent behind your boss on EVERYTHING? I think we put too much pressure on these actors to do what we want. Loyalty is nice and I believe 11 years is a pretty long time to be loyal.
I hope it happens so it will fail.

You missed the part where I said “spinoff done under similar circumstances”. I didn’t say all spinoffs. The “Sanford Arms” spinoff of “Sanford and Son” was one I was thinking about. “After MASH” also comes to mind. All of the spinoffs you mentioned were done when the main series was still in production which doesn’t apply in this case.
Well, there’s Mother Night where Goodman played a government man providing an expat playwrite in Germany with hate filled propaganda editorials to read on the radio, specially punctuated to send classified coded messages to the Allies.

The show is Roseanne, anything less will not be received well and will be a failure.
Have you ever seen Barton Fink by the Coen brothers? Starring John Turturro and John Goodman. Goodman played an incredible dark character very unexpected. A quirky movie probably not for everyone but brilliant.
She was awful on TBBT and The Talk. But, we know the lgbtqrstuvwxyz folks will love it.
