With the shock of the swift and sudden cancellation by ABC of its highest-rated series Roseanne after the series co-creator, star and executive producer Roseanne Barrs racist tweets finally starting to subside, a question emerges: Whats next?
I hear executive producers Tom Werner and Sara Gilbert, the main driving force behind the revival, are expected to meet with some of the series writers, led by executive producer/showrunner Bruce Helford, in a few days after the raw emotions from the abrupt cancellation have cooled off to kick around possible ideas for continuing the show without Barr.
The effort to save the show in some shape and form, led by Carsey-Werner, which owns and produces Roseanne, is understandable given the success of the revival and the money at stake. The independent production company already has all actors under contract for next season. The top-notch co-starring cast, led by John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf and Gilbert, love working together and I hear they are potentially open to returning if the right creative idea is presented to them.
Still, there are a lot of hurdles, from coming up with a concept that will live up to the high creative bar set by the original series to changing the name of the show.
An informed source close to the situation said pulling off an offshoot series with the rest of the Roseanne cast is possible but not probable. Another source called it a long shot. If it comes together, Roseanne 2.0 would likely not be ready for fall. if it doesnt, the focus will shift to who will get paid for the aborted Season 11. I hear there have been no conversations yet with the Roseanne cast, writers or crew about compensation but such talks should be forthcoming if the Hail Mary pass to salvage the show does not work.
I hear ABC is currently not involved in any discussions about a potential Roseanne spinoff without Barr. Unlike the case of Two and a Half Men star Charlie Sheen, who was fired by series producer Warner Bros TV after his epic 2011 meltdown but the series was kept alive by CBS until a replacement was found, ABC didnt just disassociate itself from Barr, it canceled her series. That makes for more complicated conversations should a potential offshoot overcome the first big hurdle coming up with a concept that the producers and cast like.
And then there is Barr, whose shadow will be looming large in the background. After initially apologizing to Valerie Jarrett for the racist Planet of the Apes comparison, Barr has grown more defiant, re-tweeting up a storm of messages from supporters and indicating she may be ready a fight back.
Roseanne Barr ✔ @therealroseanne you guys make me feel like fighting back. I will examine all of my options carefully and get back to U. 2:54 PM - May 30, 2018
Barr already attacked two of her Roseanne cast members, Michael Fishman and Gilbert, who had condemned her Jarrett tweets. She will likely continue to lob Twitter grenades should the show, which she co-created and headlined for 10 seasons, go on without her.
Call it “I don’t roll on Shabbos.”
It would be interesting to see how they write Roseanne off the show.
That way the entire cast of (mostly liberal) writers and actors who aren't rich like Barr can continue to feed their families on re-run residuals?
After all, Valerie Jarrett is a disgusting person. Would anyone care if Harvey Weinstein were compared to an ape, despite Nazi caricatures, etc?
Won’t watch..they will turn into a liberal Commie Will and Grace sort of show. If its not with Roseanne who the show is named after than forget it
It isn’t ‘Roseanne’ without Roseanne.
The only thing im the way of the show is fake leftist PC outrage. I wouldn’t be surprised if the people involved in the show begin to realize this and begin to resent the unfair application of this thin phony outrage that never extends to liberals guilty of as much as Roseanne is.
ie: We should give up MILLIONS why...?
Lol!
What a bunch of absolute idiots.
LMAO! This is the equivalent of “Whoops!” The network just killed the gold egg laying goose. Now they hope they can hatch one of the eggs.
Liberal, a group that shoots themselves in the head to show others how righteous they are.
Probably fail worse than "two and a half men" without Charlie Sheen.
It. Will. Tank.
Go get em’ Sara. F-d up moonbat you are but waste that money.
I remember a show did this back in the late eighties when Valerie Harper quit the show named after her in a dispute with the producers.
They killed her character off and renamed it “Valerie’s Family” and brought in Sandy Duncan as an aunt.
The next season I think they changed the name again to “The Hogan Family” or something along those lines. But I think it was canceled soon after.
So I guess it is possible.
.
They made a huge mistake by dumping Roseanne, and are trying to find a way out.
There is no way out. They’ll have to pay the price of their manipulative blunder.
Roseanne could go anywhere she wants and make fools of them.
Maybe they will pull on Roseanne what they did to John Amos on “Good Times”. They’ll get a tragic phone call and move on.
Lets see, Roseanne takes the country by surprise by saying things that are never said on TV, giving voice to the Trump voter in a way that isnt a cartoon snidely whiplash caricature. Then shes run out of town on a rail, and Hollywood wonders will her leftist costars be able to keep the interest alive? Without Roseanne there to be that voice, it would become just another leftist echo chamber. Bet on it.
An Orwellioan Black Mirror type sitcom.
It could work!
hope they do try to write her off the show.....theses liberals will quickly learn the reason why star wars Movie SOLO failed, the reason that ESPN and the NFL is failing. the reason why the remake of ghost busters was a failure.
I believe the plan shortly after it aired was to find a reason to get rid of her. Roseann is fairly unstable so coming up with a reason was easy.
with Roseann off of the show ABC gains creative CONTROL something they did not have before.
They can't call it Roseanne.
And even The Connors might not work.
