Attacks on small businesses by vegan activists are on the rise, according to the Countryside Alliance.
Death threats, stoked by social media and encouraged by international groups of activists, have caused butchers and farmers to live in fear.
Marlow Butchers, in, Ashford, Kent, was targeted earlier this month by activists who daubed red paint on the doors and windows of the shop. Since then, the business has been subjected to online abuse.
Wayne Marlow, who runs the business with his father and brother, told Kent Online: On the internet, it has been very threatening. It has got ridiculous activists from as far away as Australia are getting involved. The internet is the worst thing as not only are they threatening to physically destroy our business, but they are also trying to ruin our reputation online, too, by leaving negative reviews and comments. They want to close us down and people are threatening to smash the windows or petrol-bomb the store. We live in fear and were up worrying at night they are terrorizing us.
The family has reported the threats to the police.
Tim Bonner, Chief Executive of the Countryside Alliance told The Telegraph: Theres been an escalation of attacks on butchers, markets, and even abattoirs and its an extension of animal rights campaigns we have seen around other areas, using the same tactics including online abuse. They usually attack small independent businesses rather than taking on the big boys its quite cowardly.

Someone photoshop the old Nat’l Lampoon ad ‘Kill This Dog’, change it to say ‘If you vandalize this shop we’ll kill this dog!’
In a episode from Season II of the Sopranos, recall Satriale’s Pork Store serving as the venue for solving a personnel problem within the family. Hey, conventional wisdom has always been “never watch sausage being made”.
I knew a vegan chick that used to force her dog to not eat meat as well. I told her that was animal cruelty because dogs are obligatory carnivores, but she would never listen to reason. Poor mutt was stuck eating rice and beans :(
oh yeah that wingnut
most of the veggies i know are hippies
Im a normal one : )
Vegan Woman Forced Her Fennec Fox To Go Vegan, And Heres What Happened
Vegans are nuts!
When being a vegetarian became too main stream the crazy “look at me” type vegetarian crowd went vegan. It was no longer chic just to be a vegetarian.
A diet that is too heavy on meat and carbohydrates like some American diets is also bad for health - without the fibre, one is at higher risk from cancer and constipation (starting with the cs :) among other issues
the correct diet is in-between: eat a lot of veggies, but also some meat, fish, eggs, etc. Even red meat is perfectly fine in moderation (depending on your genes that can be once a week or more) and fat is good, again, in moderation.
Probably the only really bad thing to avoid (with no redeeming quality) is refined sugar. Zero value.
And refined white sugar is everywhere - even down to bread etc.
Sounds like you’ve been reading The Guardian’s Food columns. Which are excellent really but down on American food in typical Guardian style. If you don’t like sugar or are afraid of it on health grounds, it is easy to avoid.
You just need to be careful in what you buy. Reading labels is a must. Whole Foods, now owned by Amazon, sells fairly decent bread from local bakeries and their 365 brand of eggs are really good - fresh, with that bright tangerine-colored yolk. Also, shopping at farmer’s markets is another great idea.
Scotland, in particular, has excellent butchers and it is still an ongoing concern. Scotch beef is a byword in excellence. I hope they survive and flourish as an industry. Having witnessed British Peta in action on the Regent Street in London, I’ve come to realize that the group is filled with seriously mentally ill young people.
Rub-a-dub-dub,
Three men in a tub,
And who do you think they be?
The butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker,
And all of them out to sea.
