I understand the privacy concerns but when we went to Europe a few years ago (before credit cards were accepted virtually everywhere), we paid a ton of money to exchange from one currency to another.

The exchange payment to the credit card company would’ve been much less, though not zero.

Most of the credit card companies seem to be at 3% plus the least favorable exchange rate for you (they get a preferred commercial rate and keep the spread).
