But if you expounded on the truth, no one got it right. Not the north, south, church (save pockets of saints having meditated on Scripture), the merchant class, the average citizen, or blacks themselves.

The evil of slavery comes from the evil hearts of men that do not apply the Gospel of Christ to it. It is only when the light of the Gospel is applied that chains are removed and liberty is established.
