HMS Hood is sunk by gunfire from the German Battleship Bismarck during the Battle of the Denmark Strait. There were only 3 survivors of Hoods 1,418 man crew.
While that may be the case the description of the demise of the Hood sure sounds like someone left the safety doors open.
On this day in 1941,
He said he was one of the sailors who went through the ship before it sailed out to Bikini, and that’s when he removed the painting.
SINK THE BISMARK - the order Churchill gave ...
The Hood captain KNEW his ships vulnurbility and was trying to close with the Bismark but wasnt able to in time to avoid the ‘plunging fire’ which catastrophically destroyed his ship.
Battle cruisers were already known as chancy by WW2 and many navies had use the in-progress hulls to make Aircraft Carriers.
Ironic that the end of the Bismark was because of archaic biplanes (so outdated the German AA guns ‘lead’ gunsights were ineffective) launching torpedos, and jammed/damaged a rudder allowing the British pursuit force to catch it.
Dana Wynter was so utterly fetching and lovable as pretty Wren Anne Davis in that movie. I remember her part well.
The Brits surely caused her demise....gonna have to listen to some Johnny Horton later on....
Yes, she is great in the film.
It is jarring to see her playing some pretty unpleasant characters in her later film roles like in “Airport”.
But I love her in “Sink the Bismark”.
