Beaner a racial slur against Mexicans? I thought it was just a nickname.

I miss seeing “greaser”. I guess “beaner” will have to do. That’s what Cheech Marin called himself (I think).

You beat me to it.

When I was in high school in Arizona 50 years ago, there were two guys who ran in my circle of friends whose nicknames were "Beaner". We all played on the football team together.

One kid was Mexican (notice I didn't say "hispanic" because he was Mexican, not the current PC version hispanic) and faster than the wind as our halfback. He went by Beaner. His choice. That's what he introduced himself as and what everybody called him. No "racial slur" was intended or taken. I still greet him as Beaner at our reunions and have been life-long friends.

The other kid was a big old farm boy who played tackle on the team. He was white. But after letting out a loud smelly fart in the huddle during one of our games, we referred to him as Beaner from then on because he said he had beans for lunch and that's why he farted. We all laughed and he readily accepted his new nom de plume without complaint. He's since passed away but we still refer to our dearly departed buddy as Beaner.

And you don't even want to know what my nickname was but it was a lot worse than Beaner. Rhymed with a term for female private parts. Embarrassing as heck when I was called it in front of the girls but taken in stride amongst my guy friends.

It was how my group of athlete friends interacted with each other. We were all buddies and had a good time ribbing, or as we said back then "pimping", each other.

Fast-forward to today's PC culture and what's wrong with the country today is that no one has a sense of humor and thinks everything they read or hear is racist or a phobia of some kind that they take offense to.

Life was better back then.
