Code Name Crossfire Hurricane: The Secret Origins of the Trump Investigation

WASHINGTON — Within hours of opening an investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia in the summer of 2016, the F.B.I. dispatched a pair of agents to London on a mission so secretive that all but a handful of officials were kept in the dark.

Their assignment, which has not been previously reported, was to meet the Australian ambassador, who had evidence that one of Donald J. Trump’s advisers knew in advance about Russian election meddling. After tense deliberations between Washington and Canberra, top Australian officials broke with diplomatic protocol and allowed the ambassador, Alexander Downer, to sit for an F.B.I. interview to describe his meeting with the campaign adviser, George Papadopoulos.

The agents summarized their highly unusual interview and sent word to Washington on Aug. 2, 2016, two days after the investigation was opened. Their report helped provide the foundation for a case that, a year ago Thursday, became the special counsel investigation. But at the time, a small group of F.B.I. officials knew it by its code name: Crossfire Hurricane.

The name, a reference to the Rolling Stones lyric “I was born in a crossfire hurricane,” was an apt prediction of a political storm that continues to tear shingles off the bureau. Days after they closed their investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server, agents began scrutinizing the campaign of her Republican rival. The two cases have become inextricably linked in one of the most consequential periods in the history of the F.B.I.

This month, the Justice Department inspector general is expected to release the findings of its lengthy review of the F.B.I.’s conduct in the Clinton case. The results are certain to renew debate over decisions by the F.B.I. director at the time, James B. Comey, to publicly chastise Mrs. Clinton in a

"Cross-Fire Hurricane" was probably chosen to mock Trump's use of the Rolling Stones hit "You Can't Always Get What You Want" in campaign events.

Gina knows all.....

So, who was the FBI plant within the Hillary campaign, if this is the norm?

Read the article. They kept knowledge of all this to about five persons. I imagine they deliberately kept Haspel in the dark.

She should be able to fill in some blanks as to travel, meeting schedules, observations, etc. I really don't think she is clueless.

No need. Hilliarly was approved by the Deep State like her husband Bill, the Bushes, and Obama.

Its common practice to keep station chiefs in the dark. Based on common sense Station Chiefs are assigned by management not by the party in power. I believe its possible to have a station chief being in charge but yet still not allowed anywhere near secret meetings most likely held in rooms designed for no outside sources otherwise the bad guys could tap into anything they wish. I look fwd to what happens once she becomes the head of the CIA. I am sure she has had enough of the political games pulled by Obama and his band of crooks...like the DOJ, the IRS,an so forth......

I do not think that is a fair analysis. The DOJ and FBI kept this hidden on purpose, and I doubt Brennan was keeping everyone else in the CIA in the dark, save for a trusted aide or two.

They see it as a proud moment for the FBI. They risked a lot trying to protect us from Trump/Putin.

So let's review:

This was dumped on the interwebs. Here are a few conclusions, any of which can be wrong:

Haspel knew everything, and is part of the Deep State problem, is a Black Hat and needs to go.

Haspel knew nothing, and is clean are the wind-driven snow, and is a Trumpist White Hat.

Hapsel knows SOMETHING, or was briefed by Pompeo on his way out the door and will help arrest Brennan.

Haspel was endorsed by Brennan because, mystically, Brennan is now a White Hat.

Haspel was endorsed by Brennan thinking Haspel knows nothing, and will never find out about Brennan's 'smoky back room' to tank Trump.

I'm sure there are many other permutations. BUT! Trust the Plan, whatever that means.

Me: There are no White Hats. There are Gray Hats and Black Hats.

Man is basically bad, which is why we need laws - and why those in power flout those laws.

Yes, like this:

By Walter Duranty May 17, 1936
MOSCOW — Reports of starvation in the Ukraine are indeed true, as has been reported on regularly, including by this paper. But there has been drought, and a recent worldwide Depression, and many peoples across the globe are going hungry as well. To attribute this solely to Stalin's political agenda is overstatement....
