In response to Spotifys newly launched Hate Content and Hateful Conduct public policy, womens advocacy group UltraViolet is calling on the streaming service to widen its net beyond R. Kelly and XXXTentacion, which were the first acts to see their music removed from promotional playlists.
UltraViolet, a national organization working on a range of issues including reproductive rights, healthcare, economic security, violence and racial justice, published an open letter Monday to Spotify head Daniel Ek, applauding a recent decision to pull Kelly and XXXTentacions music from playlists and algorithmic recommendations.
However, the group is also imploring that the policy be expanded to give the same treatment to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nelly, Eminem, Don Henley, Steven Tyler, 6ix9ine and Chris Brown acts that have been accused of abusing or harassing women.
[These] two men are not the only abusers on your platform. We implore you to take a deeper look at the artists you promote, the organizations executive director Shaunna Thomas wrote in the letter.
Every time a famous individual continues to be glorified despite allegations of abuse, we wrongly perpetuate silence by showing survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence that there will be no consequences for abuse, the letter continued. That has a cultural effect far beyond one individual artist.
Last week Spotify announced it was rolling out the new policy that would curb content that expressly and principally promotes, advocates, or incites hatred or violence against a group or individual based on characteristics, including, race, religion, gender identity, sex, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, veteran status, or disability.
The streaming giant said it partnered with rights advocacy groups, including the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Anti-Defamation League, Color of Change, Showing Up for Racial Justice, GLAAD, Muslim Advocates and the International Network Against Cyber Hate

If we followed the wishes of every advocacy group relating to music , we would be sitting in the dark listening to Anita Bryant.

Remember it was Savior Al Gore Junior who was burning records in the 1980s and getting minimum wage record store clerks busted for obscenity sales to minors all so he could launch himself on the national stage in time for a 1988 presidential run (which he parlayed into a VP slot in 1992 and 1996 and presidential run in 2000).
speaking of sitting in the dark, are they going to ban Morrissey?
Protecting so called reproductive rights is the ultimate sexual assault that is plain murder. The irony is sickening. I also will surmise Spotify will have to shed most of its music by the logic of this group. The Music industry is a cesspool along with the Movie/TV industry.
I remember that.
That would apply to most of rap music, unless it qualifies for a cultural exemption.
All while getting his Chakras rubbed out.
Well so much for Herman's Hermits.
I remember Frank Zappa tearing the PMRC a new one.
Ultraviolet should be invisible...Liberals would ban FR someday, because they are offended by us...

Wowzers ... who’da thunk it?
“UltraViolet, a national organization working on a range of issues including reproductive rights, healthcare, economic security, violence and racial justice...”
In other words, the usual bunch of commie mofos.
Well, say goodbye to Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis for starters.
There are rumors floating around that Don Henley will be the next to be Weinsteined due to the underage prostitute incident in 1980.
People are saying that what really happened that night was even worse than what was reported. I wont go into the disturbing details but, if the story is true, Henley is the rock version of Roman Polanski.
The story includes, not one ,but two underage prostitutes. One ended up dead under suspicious circumstances and the other turned her life around and is married to an influential California Republican Lawmaker. Supposedly, the lawmakers wife has pics from that night and, with encouragement from her husband, is ready to blow the lid on Henley.
Again, I stress that this story is a rumor which has been discussed on more than one website.
The official story of that night is bad enough but, if this rumor is true, Henley needs to be held accountable because the accusations are very disturbing.
Another thing: If this story is true, Henley wont be the only one going down. Governor Moonbeam is also involved.
That’s why Holder ran out there: to defend/salvage AG roadblocking of trafficking charges once Harris won Sen
seat.
Ultraviolet should be invisible...
Ultra Violet was a pal of Andy Warhol?
Spot on.
Vaginazis on the march. If I thought it’d be limited to leftie hipster platforms I’d laugh.
But, I don’t.
