I believe in God, but I’m not so presumptuous to say I know what God is.

Why would that be presumptuous? It's like knowing another person's interior life. You can make shrewd guesses based on observable characteristics, but there is no way to know it ...

...unless they tell you.

At that point, it would be presumptuous to say you still don't know.

“I believe in God, but I’m not so presumptuous to say I know what God is.”

I believe that I read in one of Hawking’s books, think it may have been A Brief History of Time, that he tended to believe in a supernatural creator because science could not explain the other side of the Big Bang.

I don’t think anyone can grasp the enormity of who and what God is. This will probably sound inaine to you but I am content with the portions He has chosen to show me throughout my life. It’s enough for me.

Those like myself do not presume to do so either; we are convinced that He declared Himself.

I think this is the most logical explanation.

From Wiki:

John Wheeler speculated that reality is created by observers in the universe. “How does something arise from nothing?”, he asked about the existence of space and time. He also coined the term “Participatory Anthropic Principle” (PAP), a version of a Strong Anthropic Principle.
