I wonder if they swerved trying to avoid the gator and that’s what caused the accident as opposed to hitting the gator head on.
A buddy of mine tagged one on Hwy 90 in east New Orleans in a 240Z. He was lucky to have survived. Gators are pretty solid chunks of meat. As Troy says “Choot ‘em!”
In the early 70s I was driving in the middle of the night, in a 914, in the fog on a raised causeway alongside a lake. I hit a dead deer laying across my lane. I went airborne but landing bouncing and stayed in my lane avoiding an on-coming semi in the opposing lane by inches.
I would think the Kia Soul had similar ground clearance issues to my case.
Kia Soul vs. an alligator?
Poor family never had a chance.
Two things to swerve to avoid... Hogs and Gators. They are heavy and low profile. You hit them odds are your vehicle is going airborn.
I don’t swerve to avoid Deer. Most of the time they just break things. Beats losing control by trying to avoid them Unless they are already laying in the road.
Don’t know about serving but according to another article they
hit the gator...

side of the road and into the median, where it hit a tree and
caught fire.
