My grandfather was a walking gas and distillate engine encyclopedia and also worked for one of Briggs & Stratton’s competitors, but he recommended the cast-iron B&S small engines. One learned to not mention Tecumsehs to him, as there would be naughty language. He maintained an interest in engines into the 1970’s but decried the “cheapened” models that were replacing his old standbys.

What did Grandpa think of Kohler small engines?
And it would probably be heresy to ask what he thought of Yamaha small diesels.

Clinton and Wisconsin were and are really good. To my absolute shock I found out that not only is Wisconsin back to independent manufacturer in US, they STILL make the air cooled V4 series which is in my grandfathers RidgeRunnerTM build and that is a 1946 unit. The latest does have EFI and computer engine management, but the forever cast iron block and sleeves are still the same.
