**Two of my best friends in the world were thrashing about early on, one as a long-haul truck diver,.....**

Wow! Long haul trucks dives! I suppose they ran off of a road into lakes or rivers, or maybe fell off bridges on the coast? Trucks haul all kinds of stuff, but i wouldn’t be interested in diving on one that had............ oh..... never mind,..... I see the typo.

Careful or you’ll get one of those Chilton vs Haynes thread wars going. And they can be almost as much fun as the ever popular Glock vs 1911 threads (which are totally won by 1911 shooters!)

“When We Are Free” - textbook required by Northwood Institute (University) for freshmen....at the time. Opened my eyes to the consequences of big government and the consequences of not being free.

When I was a kid in the 50s Daddy had a “Motor” manual. I used it a lot on my 55 Ford.

Back then it was not as difficult to include all common models.

Aside from all the great ones already mentioned, I’d have to say “The Mad Scientist’s Club”. Hehe.

That or some Jack Vance. Gotta love that Jack Vance.

4 books. "The Plague"--Albert Camus, (inspired me to be a writer.), "Grapes of Wrath"--Steinbeck, (inspired me to be a writer), "The Trial"--Kafka, "Anna Karenina"--Tolstoy

1 Essay. "Individual and Mass Behavior in Extreme Situations," by Bruno Bettelheim, an Austrian psychoanalyst and survivor of Dachau and Buchenwald).

Powerful essay still and very much applicable today and especially so. For instance a point made was that "Totalitarianism had the power to not only enforce obedience but also to change personality." Very powerful essay that has informed much of my understanding in this area. Love or hate Bettelheim, his work here as a thinker is fantastic.

Probably the World Book Encyclopedia (or is that twenty or so books?).

Theodore White's Making of the President books and Up from Liberalism by William F. Buckley also made a big impression on me when I was younger.

That's why I stopped telling people to “ just get over it”. instead its “ go through it, cry, yell, fall apart and put yourself back together again, so you don't have to visit it again later”.
