Claire Foy receives £200,000 in backpay after The Crown pay gap controversy

Claire Foy has reportedly received a hefty sum after it was revealed that, despite being the star of The Crown, she was paid less than her on-screen husband, played by Matt Smith, for the Netflix series.

Foy was a little-known actress when she was cast as Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix's lavish royal drama, while former Doctor Who actor Smith was a household name. This, producers explained, was why he was paid more than Foy for both series of The Crown.

However, the success of the show meant that the unexpected revelation caused international controversy earlier this year. The news that Foy, now an established, award-winning and well-loved actress, was paid less than Smith at a time when gender equality and pay disparity in the entertainment industry is under increased scrutiny, was not received well by the show's viewers.

A petition was signed by more than 25,000 people asking for Smith to donate his earnings to the Time's Up campaign, which raises legal aid for victims of sexual assault.

In March, Netflix apologised for the public attention brought to both stars' pay packets, and Smith and Foy have subsequently spoken out about the gulf in their paycheques.

Now, however, Netflix appears to have put the money where its mouths is and given Foy £200,000 in backpay – allegedly to compensate for the extra £10,000 per episode Smith earned over 20 episodes of The Crown.

Foy reportedly earned £29,000 per hour-long episode. Smith's salary has never been revealed.

I’m binge watching this series now. My first impression is, Wow, what a great series. I cannot think of a single mediocre to poor performance by any of the cast. Foy is wonderful as a young Queen Elizabeth. Her father, King George VI is wonderfully cast in the early part of season 1. John Lithgow is simply wonderful as Winston Churchill. Perhaps even on par with Gary Oldman’s performance last year in The Darkest Hour.

The series should continue to be awesome as the timeline continues to advance. I’m eager to see how the relationship between the sovereigns and the Margaret Thatcher led government. But, apparently that will be in season four and perhaps five.

On another note, but related, Netflix is my go to for entertainment now. There is some damn good movies and documentaries on there. Honestly blows the cable and satellite stuff out of the water.

Smith is in it? Hmph. Maybe I’ll give it a look.

Yes, it's ALL about attracting an audience and I guess that whomever decided to pay the terribly MISCAST, lousy actor, Matt Smith, more, was hoping that those who watched him as Doctor Who ( he stunk to high heaven in that role too! ), would follow him and watch THE CROWN, just for him.

HOW STUPIDLY WRONG THEY WERE ABOUT THAT!

I went out of my way to NOT watch THE CROWN, because I had read that he was going to be Prince Phillip. OH YUCK!

And oh uneducated one, slick, when it comes to anything at all about the theatre and movies...do NOT ever take miss marmelstein on; she's an expert and an authority beyond compare!

thought they did a respectful job of presenting Rev. Billy Graham.

I thought that was remarkable, and seemed to point to the importance of her faith to Her Majesty.

Of course, as head of the C of E, you would think faith would be important :-)

Claire Foy deserved every penny. Her portrayal of a young Queen Elizabeth II was just perfect. I am going to miss her going forward as another actress is taking her place to portray the Queen in her middle age.

Claire Foy was also just great as the doomed Anne Boelyn in the Masterpiece mini-series, Wolf Hall.

Prince Phillip won’t be in the show anymore? Whoa, that’s news to me!

New actors are going to be portraying the Queen and Prince Phillip as they move from youngish Royals to middle age.

He was THE worst Doctor ever and that's saying something, since some of the others were terrible too; just not THAT terrible!

So why did I keep watching that show? Out of habit. I've probably watched it longer than you've known of its existence and the resurrection of the show, has more or less ruined it; especially for viewing for the whole family.

And before you ask, HELL NO, I shan't watch the newest series with the Doctor coming back a woman! The lousy scripts and horrendous PC, that's been interjected into this show, not to mention the fact that the majority of the actors and actresses, in this moribund reinstatement, mumble, can't act and was a huge mistake!

Thanks, NP.

I had forgotten you didn’t watch the series because of Smith. I don’t blame you. As another poster pointed out, Lithgow was excellent so there is that saving grace along with Foy. As an admirer of Snowdon, keep away! Insulting portrait of a great artist.

I suppose Damien Lewis is too big a star to play a supporting role as the consort to Elizabeth. Too bad. He’s a wonderful actor and is a devastating King Henry.

You must never have seen the original series; or, perhaps you just have lousy taste...or both. *snicker*

Damien Lewis is a GREAT actor; I've seen him in quite a few things and unlike Matt, can't act his way out of a wet paperbag with help, Smith, Lewis really takes over a role, become that person/s, and NEVER is just him mouthing someone else's words with NO emotion.

The thing about THE CROWN is that besides loathing the no-talent Smith, I know far too much about Queen Elizabeth II and all of the others, so I knew that I'd just be screaming at the T.V. screen at all of the cockups. And I shan't be watching the newest abomination...the "love story" of the modern version of Edward & Wallis, that is stupid Harry and the gold digger, grand manipulator, little miss Markle. ;^)

Agreed she is fantastic. She has a very tough role and does it so well. The Emmy voters sadly seem to prefer scenery chewing and over the top performances.

Her scene with the Jackie Kennedy character is a masterpiece of subtle acting.

It should be used in acting classes to show how the slightest change in one’s facial expression or the smallest delay when responding to a question can completely change the dynamic of a scene. Just perfect.
