Claire Foy has reportedly received a hefty sum after it was revealed that, despite being the star of The Crown, she was paid less than her on-screen husband, played by Matt Smith, for the Netflix series.
Foy was a little-known actress when she was cast as Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix's lavish royal drama, while former Doctor Who actor Smith was a household name. This, producers explained, was why he was paid more than Foy for both series of The Crown.
However, the success of the show meant that the unexpected revelation caused international controversy earlier this year. The news that Foy, now an established, award-winning and well-loved actress, was paid less than Smith at a time when gender equality and pay disparity in the entertainment industry is under increased scrutiny, was not received well by the show's viewers.
A petition was signed by more than 25,000 people asking for Smith to donate his earnings to the Time's Up campaign, which raises legal aid for victims of sexual assault.
In March, Netflix apologised for the public attention brought to both stars' pay packets, and Smith and Foy have subsequently spoken out about the gulf in their paycheques.
Now, however, Netflix appears to have put the money where its mouths is and given Foy £200,000 in backpay allegedly to compensate for the extra £10,000 per episode Smith earned over 20 episodes of The Crown.
Foy reportedly earned £29,000 per hour-long episode. Smith's salary has never been revealed.

My heart bleeds.
Edna Mode needs royalty payments for superhero garb.
Aside from the content of the article, Foy is incredible in the series. She plays the queen understated, classy and very smart.
She’s such a good actress that just the slightest raising of her eyebrow or almost unnoticeable inflection of her voice alone can completely change a scene.
And the actor who plays her husband is dreadful. Foy, at least, is talented.
Matt Smith dreadful? Are you insane?
you do not pay someone more just because they do a good job. you pay them based upon their background and the bucks they bring in. equal pay for equal job not equal pay if you don’t have the same credentials.
Oh I’m just being tongue-in-cheek about this all. I don’t really care what a bunch of limeys get paid. But I do enjoy the show - thought they did a respectful job of presenting Rev. Billy Graham.
sure i enjoyed the show too. she did a great job. but if you read history you would see that Matt did the character justice. just as she did. and all this is moot because they are both gone as characters in the next season.
Prince Phillip won’t be in the show anymore? Whoa, that’s news to me!
Don’t start with me on this or IMDB (not IMDs which appears to be an automobile data system): Matt Smith is an unappealing actor who seems to act through his eyebrows.
Claire Foy, on the other hand, is a rising star who made a great hit playing Anne Boleyn in the brilliant series Wolf Hall. She managed to turn that unappealing young woman into a great woman who died like a Prince. For that reason alone, I tuned into The Crown.
In theater and film, actors do not get paid according to either their long term or short term careers. They are not civil servants or accountants. They are paid by how they attract the audience. No one tunes in to anything that stars Matt Smith. Claire Foy is going to be a star.
No, I am not insane. I’m a theater professional. I won’t make noises about your profession; try not to embarrass yourself by commenting on mine.
no one tuned in to the crown to see foy. they tuned in to see smith. look at the numbers for Dr. Who. it’s tough having an intelligent conversation with you. See Ya.
Guess what the characters are changing be cause of age. so i guess another unsubstantiated comment by you.

what do you do local theatre. you are not a professional. just another person with an inaccurate opinion.
Go back to looking up automobile data, slickdrain. You’re out of your league.
He was fantastic as The Doctor.
