No sunlight and very little oxygen at those depths. Throw in no salt and you have perfect conditions. If this were the ocean rust would have destroyed most of the ship by now.

You might think of Lake Superior as America's largest outdoor air conditioner.

One time I went camping on the shores of Superior during the summer, when it was 100F in Minneapolis. That night on the lake, it was so cold, I could see my breath.

Superior still has major ice on it, btw. Not even all the lakes in the Twin Cities are ice free, yet.
