“...Two months ago, the judge who sentenced Bostic said she regretted it. Former St. Louis Circuit Judge Evelyn Baker sentenced Bostic in 1997. But in February, she said in an op-ed that she “deeply” regretted punishing Bostic for his immaturity, and asked the U.S. Supreme Court to give him the chance for reform that she never did....”

This now pathetic “awoke” judge clearly now lacks the temperament to be a judge. If she’s still on the bench, she should retire and take up social work.

Just that brief description of the crimes the kid committed tells me all we need to know about him. He would have been back in prison for life at some point anyway. He tried to kill somebody. I am glad that evil is locked away for life. There is no mention of what this guy has done in prison to prove any change to his character or disposition.

His accomplice, Donald Hutson, took the deal.

Said accomplice will be up for parole at age 33 or thereabouts. Bostic, 112. Shoulda taken the deal.

Should have taken the deal, he’d be out soon if not already.

...she said in an op-ed that she “deeply” regretted punishing Bostic for his immaturity...

Armed robbery where he actually shot to kill (save for the heavy outer clothing) is cast off as "immaturity"?

I'd have to get details regarding the crimes involved, his police history before that fateful day and his conduct since he's been in prison before I'd decide if I see that sentence as "cruel" and/or "unusual".

At 16 I wasn't the brightest bulb on the tree and I *certainly* wasn't particularly mature (or aware).

Some people are in prison for the sole purpose of protecting the rest of us from them.

"Mr. Bostic should get a chance to show that crimes he committed at 16 do not define him," the ACLU said. "The Constitution demands nothing less."

Maybe he does deserve a second chance. But I don't see how he is owed one because of the Constitution.

A former student was involved in a triple murder. He was sentenced to 3 fifteen-year terms to be served consecutively. He was maybe 19 at the time. He’ll be over 60 when he gets out, having virtually spent his entire adulthood behind bars. I can’t imagine his life after (or if) he gets out. Don’t misunderstand—he deserved the sentence he got (if not more time). The adult who led the killing spree got the needle.
