The story I relate about the amateur who first discovered Neolithic cave paintings is quite telling. His life and reputation were ruined; the last year's of his life were spent in infamy.
After his death more cave paintings were discovered, and the 'professional archaeologist' - to his credit - that destroyed the amateur spent the rest of his years making amends. Much good it did the victim, though.
Interesting story. I’ve read of many similar types of instances.
