No, no. Beckham came across her diamond-tipped points naturally.

The Fountains of Paradise by Arthur C. Clarke:

Clarke envisions a microscopically thin but strong “hyperfilament” that makes the elevator possible.

Mr. Clarke was quite the imaginative man, wasn’t he?

One of the best. He and Asimov addressed some religious ideas in their stories.

Neal Stephenson wrote a book about it:

The Diamond Age.

It has my vote for the single most brilliant SF book ever written.

Not SF, but an enjoyable read and it is FREE!

The rise and fall of diamonds
By Edward Jay Epstein

An enjoyable history of diamonds and De Beers.
Ian Fleming was in it up to his neck!

The author posts his one-time bestseller online for free.
A bit dated, but not much, if anything has changed.

Theodore Sturgeon came up with the ultimate light weight strong stuff way back when:

Title: It Was Nothing—Really! Title Record # 45045
Author: Theodore Sturgeon

That said, grew up on Clarke/Asimov/Heinlein,and the rest...
