Panel Two

"Almighty God hath created the mind free. All attempts to influence it by temporal punishments or burthens...are a departure from the plan of the Holy Author of our religion...No man shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship or ministry or shall otherwise suffer on account of his religious opinions or belief, but all men shall be free to profess and by argument to maintain, their opinions in matters of religion. I know but one code of morality for men whether acting singly or collectively."

Panel Three

God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, that his justice cannot sleep forever. Commerce between master and slave is despotism. Nothing is more certainly written in the book of fate than that these people are to be free. Establish a law for educating the common people. This it is the business of the state and on a general plan.

Panel Four

"I am not an advocate for frequent changes in laws and constitutions, but laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors."

One of my favorite founders.
I have been to the Memorial many times as well as his home, Monticello.

There may be more responses tomorrow. It’s late at night, and I’ve noticed that these boards really slow down late in the evening.

I certainly am not embarrassed by his comments. To the contrary, I am inspired by them.

I don’t subscribe to all this political correctness, that because he owned slaves, because he didn’t have a 21st century liberal politically correct conscience, that he should be disregarded. Based on liberal criteria, to that effect, then we can admire no one from history, because he/she would have had something in their life and times, which liberals today find objectionable.

I didn’t look at any reference when I typed this/ So it might not be quoted perfectly. It’s in my mind. Always tried to stop there on the way home via National Airport.

Parking easy in. Easy out. And always get a patriots’ spiritual re-charge. Jefferson. A great democrat. I hope his ideas make the GOPe shudder. Especially that jerk ball Graham from SC.

Because James Madison is known for the US Constitution, whose limited government is not fashionable in DC. The Jefferson Memorial was built by FDR as a monument to the founder of the Democrat party.

Probably more than anyone else, Thomas Jefferson was the intellectual force behind the founding of America as a liberal democracy. Compared to his contemporaries as well as all those who came before, he was a tremendous champion of freedom.

He wasn’t the founder of the Democratic Party. That was Andrew Jackson. Jefferson’s party was the Democratic Republicans.
