Careful there - a 6 would be 10 (ten) times more powerful as a 5.

The Richter scale is logarithmic, which is exponential.

Actually, I think it’s a logarithmic scale so a 5 is no where near half of a 10. If I remember right, a 6 is 10 times more powerful than a 5, and a 7 is 10 times more powerful than a 6...

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought the difference in magnitude was a factor of 10 between each full increment of the scale.

Not half. 5 orders of magnitude. 10^5 vs. 10^10. It’s a logarithmic scale because the numbers are so huge its the only way to get your brain around it.
