Yes, it is a bad word. The root word is something like an animal, heathen, foul thing, like what you might use to describe a godless whore, and in fact it is generally used as an insult for non-believing Jewish women or gentile girls. It is also a subject of some neurotic fixation even as reported by Jews themselves. You can get the picture from the following quote:
