Chattanooga woman says she was forced to move to back of plane because of her weight

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — A Chattanooga woman says she was forced to move to the back of an airplane because of her weight.

Amber Manjee is just one of several people across the country sharing her bad experience on an airline publicly.

Ever since she's been back home, Amber Manjee's had the incident on her mind.

"I was in tears," she said. "The people who sat in front of me turned around and said, 'well you should lose weight.'"

Manjee says she asked for a seat belt extender to be more comfortable when she sat down, even though she can do without one. It's part of her routine when she's traveling for business, along with picking an emergency exit row seat.

But, next thing she knew the Delta flight attendant came to tell her she had to move this time.

Manjee explained, "She's saying loud for everybody to hear 'You're overweight. You have to have an extender. You have to move,'"

Manjee says she hasn't felt the way she did in that moment since she was in high school.(snip)

Manjee emailed the company from the back seat of the plane she was reassigned to. By the time the plane landed she had a response. Delta apoligized for the way she was treated and offered her a $500 voucher.

"Oh, I've not accepted it," she said.

Instead, she wants Delta to promise employees will receive more sensitivity training, so that what happened to her, doesn't happen to anyone else.(snip)

Delta's company policy states that seat belt extenders cannot be used in the exit row due to the likelihood that the dangling strap may become a hazard for passengers attempting to exit the aircraft in the event of an emergency.

You have to get the balance of the plane right for it to fly safely. Why does she not get it??

She must not have been all that upset about the incident since she’s publicizing it and therefore drawing attention to herself.

Maybe she should just lose some weight.

If it was purely a weight issue, I’d want her over the CG point of the aircraft. Having her in the rear would make it harder to push the nose down - rear CG is more conducive to a stall situation.

Just purchase a row of seats

I sat on a Southwest flight last week. A woman sat next to me and I had to get up. Change seats. I had to move. Wasn’t going to sit next to a stranger for two and a half hours wit her halfway on my lap.

In tolerable

Why doesn’t she have to purchase two seats

Balance had nothing to do with it.

In this case I don’t think it was a weight-and-balance issue, it was the seat-belt extender she wanted, which is considered to be a tripping hazard.

Either way, she needs to quit whining.

It seems that balance wasn’t the issue. It was her request for a seat belt extender in the emergency exit row. She requests that row knowing that seats in front don’t recline. She also appears incapable of assisting which is required in that row.

I was on a 17 seat turboprop. We had to shift seats for load balancing.

Anything to make the pilot's job easier.

Safety first.

Especially in an airplane.

First world problems. Half the people in this country are whiners.

I wouldn’t want her blocking the emergency exit row. Think of how long it would take her to get her fat ass out the exit.

She is grossly obese. There are real weight balancing issues on airplanes.

“You have to get the balance of the plane right for it to fly safely. Why does she not get it??”

Ha ha.

That’s not why.

“Delta’s company policy states that seat belt extenders cannot be used in the exit row...”

I thought they did make people purchase two seats.

They need the testers they use for overhead luggage but for peoples asses. Cant get your ass in the ass tester size guide, you’re paying for two seats.

Apparently she was originally seated in an exit row.

On planes they frequently make the point that people who sit in an exit row may have to help other passengers, and if they cannot, they should ask the stewardess to move them.

So asking her to move was no big deal. The stewardess should have been nicer in informing her, but the move request was not unreasonable.

She appears to need to pass a test on being able to get out of all emergency exits on the plane in question.

If she was black they would have taken the chance on the plane possibly crashing before they asked her to move.

I’m surprised the plane could take off at all.
