Chattanooga woman says she was forced to move to back of plane because of her weight

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — A Chattanooga woman says she was forced to move to the back of an airplane because of her weight.

Amber Manjee is just one of several people across the country sharing her bad experience on an airline publicly.

Ever since she's been back home, Amber Manjee's had the incident on her mind.

"I was in tears," she said. "The people who sat in front of me turned around and said, 'well you should lose weight.'"

Manjee says she asked for a seat belt extender to be more comfortable when she sat down, even though she can do without one. It's part of her routine when she's traveling for business, along with picking an emergency exit row seat.

But, next thing she knew the Delta flight attendant came to tell her she had to move this time.

Manjee explained, "She's saying loud for everybody to hear 'You're overweight. You have to have an extender. You have to move,'"

Manjee says she hasn't felt the way she did in that moment since she was in high school.(snip)

Manjee emailed the company from the back seat of the plane she was reassigned to. By the time the plane landed she had a response. Delta apoligized for the way she was treated and offered her a $500 voucher.

"Oh, I've not accepted it," she said.

Instead, she wants Delta to promise employees will receive more sensitivity training, so that what happened to her, doesn't happen to anyone else.(snip)

Delta's company policy states that seat belt extenders cannot be used in the exit row due to the likelihood that the dangling strap may become a hazard for passengers attempting to exit the aircraft in the event of an emergency.

She would probably get stuck in the exit and prevent others from getting out.

Wait, only a seatbelt extender?? Not several buckled end-to-end?!

Amber should consider the possibility that God was speaking to her through those nasty people who insulted her--his message:

"Lose the f___ing weight, lady!" :-)

We flew in an exit row on Easy Jet for two hour flight from Stuttgart to Edinburgh. We picked the seats as we had extra leg room. Before we boarded and on board we were asked multiple times if we understood what that meant.

If you cannot help get the door open and/or move slowly due to age, injury/disease, or weight, sit somewhere else.

I’ve been forced to move because of my weight and I’m not fat. It’s called trimming out the airplane. A little knowledge of physics goes a long way.

Don’t worry. In an emergency, they have a block-and-tackle crane and forklift on board to assist her get off the plane and into the raft.

How you gonna feel on a transAtlantic flight with that beside you?

Enveloped with love, and enveloped with sweaty fat that smells like Cheetos.

She looks a little chubby, alright. How do you handle a situation like this in a classy way?

I would do this:

(Wearing my Delta uniform and smiling a big Delta smile):

"Hello there! Say, we need you to pick up your fat waddling ass with all the sweat and disgusting rippling putrescent flesh, and -- if you are capable of getting this much mass into motion -- slide your greasy butt down the aisle, because your mass is so f***ing much that it is affecting the Earth's gravity field and is upsetting jet airliners all over the world, but especially this one. You may yet kill us all unless you move that zip-code-sized heap of rotting flesh you jokingly call a body through the aisle to the back. I've brought butter for the eventuality you get stuck, you moose."
(I flash that bright, happy Delta smile again)

Probably to make up for the 48 normal-weighted folks on the plane.

That woman doesn’t need to be in the Exit Row.

Maybe there were a bunch of anvils in the cargo hold.

Any aircraft with CG out of limits is dangerous, from a piper cub to a 777. Yes they’re different, but gravity is gravity.

My experience is that people that size, especially if they were fat as children/teenagers, are totally self-centered.

She’s not physically capable of operating the emergency exit door and could be seen as a hindrance in the event of an emergency

When you compare apples to oranges, that is what makes no sense, but you go right ahead and compare load and balance in a small prop driven plane to a large jet powered plane at least it will keep you busy.

And to address the argument someone else made that the belt extender was a trip hazard, she offered to do without to stay in her seat. No this was a case of fat shaming.

Nice, but if you read the article it had absolutely nothing to with weight, other than fat shaming. The reason made for making her move was that the belt extender was a trip hazard in that area if there was an emergency. The lady offered to do without, it was a comfort issue not necessity, but the the stewardess was intent on fat shaming not safety.
