I've decided to reclaim my life – by using an old Nokia phone

Can a low-tech phone replace a smartphone for less-essential tasks and times – and peace of mind?

‘$85 later I was up and running … and then my excitement was stopped cold, with a stern smack back to 2003.’ Photograph: Samuel Gibbs for the Guardian My wife and I have two young children. On a good night, we’re lucky to get a couple of hours together. More often than not, you’ll find us on the couch, in silence, each staring into a phone. And yet, one night not so long ago, a handful of my enslaved brain cells sparked unexpectedly to life. I looked up from Twitter. “Is this how it all ends?” I wondered out loud. “Is this what we’ll do for the rest of our lives?”

Actually, I only traded in my Blackberry for the iPhone a little over a week ago.

I got texts and emails in the Blackberry, too. My use of the devise has not changed, but the iPhone works differently to access the same functions.

“I have a flip phone”

Same here. No Facebook and any like it for me.

Same here - Consumer Cellular for $18.00 per month and it’s never out of my purse except to call the power company when all the power goes off - which happens a lot here!!! A LOT!

It’s in my purse for emergencies on the road. Never had any cell phone until we moved and traveled from one coast to the other. I think I used it then to let our family know when we’d arrive.

We’ll have relatives here for Easter dinner and I can see it now - all sitting in the living room with smart phones in hands within 10 minutes of arriving! With “growls” from me and no one paying attention!

Yeah...well...I have a LAND LINE!

Getting tough to find pay phones when traveling, though...

It seems nice enough, but still pricey and not available yet.

My current personal phone has the dial pad and a keyboard that slides out. I tell people to text, not call.

Memory failing, it was probably 2002 that I got the Nokia 3585, never fails, always works.

I would melt down. If I am not working, or sleeping, or working on my house or landcruiser, or driving the landcruiser across the desert, I am reading something. I spend much time reading FR for news and politics, and to say something snarky that most people prolly dont get, I love to learn new things, and read about any science or technical subject I can get my fingers on. I even watch how to videos for just about everything do it yourself even for things I would not actually be able to do myself, and even watch cooking videos for new tips and ideas. I am at the age that most of my freinds have wives and kids, and I travel extensively for a living, and women have made it crystal clear they want nothing to do with me since my 20s, so I eat every meal alone, and I feel like it is a phenomenal waste of time to not be learning something while eating. Same with the bar, I can’t just watch some millionaires running and jumping on the television, so when I just do not have the energy to insert myself into a group of strangers conversation, I gotta be reading reading reading. Though I do fine without it when camping in the desert, but do have the fire (campfire TV)

I have a slider.

I needed to access some apps at work,

I bought a little machine for work.

I am now looking for a phone with only wifi to hold books.

I am good with having different devices for different things.

Any company that replaced flip phones with a slider or a clamshell with a keyboard would make billions worldwide.

Put a basket in the hall, and tell folks that it is a non electronic holiday. Have games and things to do.

We share an old flip phone when leaving the house. I average about 3 calls a year on it but Mr. b uses it much more.

I’m one of those stupid adults who Camera Hogg rants about. And proud of it! Never have posted a youtube. Never texted or tweeted or taken a selfie. Never used an ATM. Don’t post my life on FB. Can’t say I’ve missed a thing.

Had one of those too. Had to finally let it go...not enough updates in the world to keep it running well.

Sounds good to me....have games and haven’t been able to interest anyone in them.. Even my 9 year old grandson tells me no now. I told him he was much more fun when he was younger....I never got NO then. We use to play lots of Monopoly. I’ve tried to interest him in POKENO since Christmas....for real money - HA!

I’ve found a friend!!! Don’t even have a debit card. Email and internet is my speed. That’s it!

We should form a club.. Some jerk here on FR a few years back called me a luddite....figured he had to be a democrat criticizing someone because of their differing opinions...

I actually have used one of these for some years:

Buying cards good for a year of airtime ($100), I accumulated over 2000 minutes. Now I buy cards good for a year but without any minutes ($50). Still have over 2000 minutes since I turn my phone on to make calls, or sometimes turn it on in case I'm expecting a call. Might use 30 minutes in a year.

$50 this last year to have a cell phone I can use IF I need it.

I try to avoid associating with people who want to text other people.
